For some reason, I felt very French all day today and felt like listening to French songs, all thanks to watching Mr. Bean’s Holiday the other day and hearing Charles Trénet’s La Mer again. This song is just so lovely, and it is all about the beauty of the sea. It is poetry set to music and just makes one feel lovely, happy, and uplifted. It is a classic for a reason.

I also re-discovered another French classic, this time the lovely love song La Vie En Rose by Edith Piaf. Piaf’s voice is just so… Ah, the musicians today cannot compare. It is no wonder she was called “the little sparrow”.

Listening to Piaf’s vibrato makes me glad that I sing with vibrato. Not many singers can do vibrato well, and it is no longer a desirable skill in music today. It is used sparingly, if at all. I have even been told by various people over the years to stop doing it, but for me, vibrato is so natural that I cannot not do it. My voice fits these “old”, classic songs far better than today’s music anyway. I am never going to be a famous recording artist so I just ignore what people say and sing the way I want. The way that makes me happy. (^_~)

However, I would love to learn how to do some runs like Zaz in Jew Veux. It is has such a raw and fun sound. A real toe-tapper.

And… one more song because it is about rain, and for some reason I have yet to figure out, I adore songs about rain.
