It still felt very strange to not always have something to do with his time. As a Nightwatchman, his life had divided very cleanly down the middle -- either he was on the street, or he was in his bed. Either he was on his feet or he was on his back. He'd never had time to, say, sit in the sun with bare feet and drink coffee while the woman he ( Read more... )

Rogue stirred quietly, turning her face against the place where Ned usually slept and stretcher her arm out across it. She pulled in a breath and then stretched, slowly, and yawned, and then went back to lying still.

She felt like she could go right back to sleep, with the sound of the ocean and the rustle of the palms, but she pushed herself up onto her elbows instead, sheet sliding down her back to rest on the curve of her waist. She glanced around the hut, at the signs Ned was around- armor, mostly, so he wasn't off patrolling- and signs of her, which would be clothes dropped in piles. Not a lot of clothes, but some, nonetheless. She got out of bed without picking any of them up, just wrapping the white sheet around her and walking out across the sand, wiping sleep from her eyes and ignoring her hair as it moved in a wild, tousled mes around her.

"Mmmmmn's beautiful out," she said, stopping next to him.

"Afternoon, darlin'."

He looked up at her and, not for the first time (and, surely, not for the last) he was struck by how utterly beautiful she was first thing in the morning.

He traced his hand up her thigh over the sheet.

"An' it always is beautiful here, isn't it?"

"Yeah," she said, smiling a little and huffing a quiet laugh, leaning slightly into his hand, "even when it's cold 'n snowin'."

"I like this better than the snow," said Ned, his hand resting at the top of her thigh where it curved up into her ass. "I don't have to worry about my toes while I'm drinking my tea."

"Reckon I prefer the sun 'n sand, too," she said, leaning against the chair a little and dropping one arm to drag her fingers through his hair, tips moving in firm strokes against his scalp.

"I just like bein' warm."

"Means you can wear less clothes." He lifted his hand to where the sheet dipped in the small of her back and slipped it under, palming the curve of her bare ass and pulling her closer against him.

"That's probably why I prefer it."

She bit her lip and bent her head down, leaning down a little and sliding her arms around his shoulder to gently but her forehead against his crown, and nuzzle the tip of her nose in his hair.

"Spent my whole life hiding under long sleeves 'n gloves. You're damn right I'll wear less clothes if I can."

"I ain't complainin'," said Ned, smiling and leaning forward to press a kiss against the smooth skin over the ridge of her collarbone.

"You still lookin' at pictures of pretty dresses, pretty girl?"

"Yeah," she said breathlessly with a huge grin. "Can't help it, even though I can't exactly go out 'n buy some dream dress I see in a magazine. It's fun, though. Not that I know the first thing about plannin' a weddin'- invitations 'n flowers 'n music, food for guests in where to have it and who to- you know, who'd perform the ceremony. There's a lot that goes into it."

"Don't think it works the same here," said Ned, rubbing his nose against her skin. "Think it can work anyway you damn like. Then again, don't ask me. I'm just a copper."

She brushed her fingers under his shirt and over his tattoo.

"But a weddin's a weddin', there's gotta be- things to it."

"Be whatever things to it you like," said Ned, both hands against her bare skin now. "Whatever you want, I'll figure out a way to get it for you. Promise."

"Gonna give a girl some pretty grand ideas, you go on like that," Rogue murmured, leaning back to look over his face, lifting an eyebrow.

"Girl of mine can have whatever she likes, within my power to give it her," said Ned, raising his eyebrow right back. "Have to make up for her being a Copper's wife somehow."

She grinned that, and cocked an eyebrow.

"Could say th'same thing for bein' a superhero's husband. Guess we don't have t'worry about that here, though."

"Yeah," said Ned, reaching up to pull her down for a kiss. "But a Copper's always a Copper, darlin'."
