Title: Love Prank
Rating: PG
Verse: Games, Gen IV
Characters: Lyra/Silver, Ethan
Summary: Lyra feels guilty about playing jokes. For lurora.

There was a “Bang!” and a “Splat!” and Lyra knew that something awful had happened - awfully hilarious. She clambered down the tree that she had been hiding in all this while; her friend followed, his cap perched jauntily on his head and his Marill on his shoulder. “That was awesome! I told you the plan would work,” Ethan exclaimed, pealing with laughter. “And take that, you meanie!” he added, addressing the redhead in the mud. “That will teach you not to bother Lyra anymore!”

She couldn’t help but smile too at the sight of her rival tripping over the rope and landing headlong into the dirty puddle she and Ethan spent the entire morning setting up. He was standing up now, trying to brush off the mud from his jacket, but it didn’t work - he was completely caked with mud from head to toe. He wasn’t crying, he wouldn’t dare; he had too much pride in him to do that - yet he wasn’t smiling either, or fuming, or scowling, or anything like that.

He started to walk away, this time, surprisingly, without pushing her out of his way. Lyra gaped at her rival’s odd responses - Ethan was right, there would be no more pushing and shoving, no more angry glares and harsh words. Yet he was dead wrong about the part about her rival bothering her. She knew very well that she wasn’t scared of his treatment, at least, not after she knew that she could let her battling skills speak for her, that she was capable of sweeping his entire team with just her Typhlosion alone. And maybe, if she forced herself to admit it, she could go as far as to say that she liked being pushed around. After all, it was a sign that he noticed her, that he knew that she was there... knew that she existed in this world, in his world. And each time his hand brushed across her back, it sent a weird tingling sensation down her spine. How could she describe it? It was like her insides were burning, yet she was completely frozen on the spot... her balance was off though, and she tended to stumble sideways, but that was probably due to the impact of his thrust...

She got pushed less often now, though. No doubt, he had changed. He was trying to be nicer to her now - and she knew that she had something to do with it, more or less. After all, she was the one who cared for him, and supported him, even though he constantly marked her as an enemy. She was the only one who tried to befriend him and understand him. And what would happen after today? He probably wouldn’t push her away anymore, but there was a high possibility that he wouldn’t speak to her either, or look her in the eye, or make any contact with her whatsoever. He would ignore me, she thought, her heart sinking; he would ignore me as if we never met, as if we never battled each other, as if we never battled together.

A lump of tears formed in her throat; she swallowed them back. He wasn’t crying even after how she treated him, and neither should she, for she was the one that started it all, she was the one who was impulsive and childish and stupid, she was the one who suggested replacing water with mud, who conveniently forgot how hard he tried to atone for his misdeeds. She had forgotten how he battled side by side with her at the Dragon’s Den, or how he cheered her on right before she battled the Elite Four; she had forgotten how he started to open his heart to her, how he began to bare his soul to her.

Until now.

He was hiding his feelings, but Lyra knew; she knew that he was hurt and mad - after all, who wouldn’t be, if he was humiliated by the person whom he recently became close to? It took him so long to acknowledge her, as a fellow trainer, as a friend. And it could only take a mere prank to destroy that fragile bond. It was unfair, horribly unfair, but she couldn’t turn back.

She had only herself to blame for this.

“Sorry,”

“Hey, there’s no need to apologize,” said Ethan, “for he deserved this, he...”

She didn’t let her friend finish; Ethan didn’t know him, he wasn’t his rival, he wasn’t his friend - but she was, she had always been, and she knew what had to be done. She dashed to his side and brushed her lips across his grubby cheek; his hand instinctively reached for her back. He gave her a slight push and an unmistakable smile as he walked off into the distance, leaving behind a trail of muddy footprints - and a girl who broke into a huge grin too... whose heart was finally at peace.
