It was a comparatively nice day, although certainly not perfect. It had been a long time since von Karma had encountered a perfect day, and he was unlikely to encounter one again, but... this was alright. By most people's standards, it would have been absolutely fantastic, but-

...and the knock at the door had to take it down from 'comparatively nice' to 'probably extremely irritating.' He sighed, set his sandwich down, and headed for the door.

"What do you want?" he said, in the annoyed, 'you damn kids get off my lawn' tone he seemed to be using a lot recently. His eyes narrowed slightly as he examined the boy-he seemed somewhat familiar...

Oh great, that angry old man from the Pokémon Center...

"Oh uh, I was told by Mr. Edgeworth to come here?" he asked holding out the card that he had received the other day.

...damn, it was that idiot kid from the Pokemon Center. And-what, really? How could Edgeworth see any promise in this kid?

"...Why?" said von Karma, suspicion creeping into his tone.

"Well, he seemed impressed by how much I'd filled my Pokédex and the fact I saw something mysterious out at Lake Valor."

He pulled out his drawing for Prof. von Karma.

von Karma's eyebrow rose slightly at that. The drawing was... just... kind of horrible, but it did vaguely resemble something he'd read about.

"...have you ever taken a drawing class in your life?" said von Karma, cocking his head slightly. "Perhaps a description would have been less eye-offending. Anyway, give me your Pokedex."

"Why would I need to take a drawing class anyway? I'm a Pokémon Trainer, not a Pokémon Watcher..." Ash replied before pulling out his Pokédex and handing it over.

"I've got data on over 300 species recorded..."

"So you'd actually be able to draw something reasonably identifiable," snapped von Karma, before taking the Pokedex. He gave Ash a skeptical look before opening the device up and going through it.

...Well. The kid was right.

"This is rather impressive," he said, although there was a disappointed tone that suggested he was forcing himself to say it.

"Well, yeah... You're bound to see a lot of Pokémon when you travel around several regions fighting every tough trainer you can while helping random people with their problems..." he had a large grin on his face.

"I got top 16 in the Kanto League, top 8 in the Johto League, I'm the reigning Champion of the Orange League and I conquered all seven facilities of the Hoenn Battle Frontier."

"Then the quality of those institutions must have deteriorated since I was a trainer," said von Karma, although he didn't throw out any more pointed insults. Ash probably wouldn't pick up on it, but this was progress, as far as von Karma was concerned.

"Nevertheless... it's better than what I've seen recently. What Pokemon do you use?"

"Well, at the moment it's just Pikachu, Houndour and Wingull." he started. "I've got more stronger Pokémon back at home with Professor Oak, but I figured it'd be a good challenge to go for a fresh start in Sinnoh."

"...I see," said von Karma, giving him an unsteady look. He didn't exactly revere Oak like the rest of the scientific community seemed to, but... the fact that he had the connection was still somewhat interesting.

"...Well," he said, looking somewhat conflicted.
