“Scully?”

“Hm?”

She almost fell asleep on him, but she was sure he wasn’t aware.

It was nearing four in the morning on their stakeout and they had spent a good portion of their time talking. Silence had taken over for a few minutes, allowing Scully to fully realize her tiredness.

“If you...” Mulder paused. “If you wanted to go, I’d let you.”

He didn’t mean to leave the stakeout and she knew that. She perked up in her chair, focus on him.

“Why do you think I’d leave you, Mulder?” Scully asked.

“I just want you to be happy,” he told her.

“I...” she trailed off. She couldn’t finish. She couldn’t lie. “I wouldn’t leave you.”

“Yeah,” he agreed quietly. “I know.”

He reached over and placed his hand on her hand, which was resting on the seat. She held onto his hand, linking her fingers between his.

Soon enough, the morning light would creep upon them. With its arrival was the departure of the stillness of the night, the whispered words in the wee hours, and the belief that they could both escape-from their past and their pain.

The morning light would save them.
