“You’re wet,” Mulder said when he opened his apartment door.
“It’s raining,” Scully stated bluntly.
He let her inside.
She walked toward the couch as he closed the door. She pulled off her soaked coat.
“Here,” he offered.
Mulder took her coat, but didn’t know where to put the wet article. He went into his kitchen and hung it on the back of the chair closest to him.
When he returned, she was sitting on his couch, face pressed into her hands. Mulder approached slowly and sat down beside her. She sniffed, trying to stop her tears. Gently, he placed an arm around her.
“I didn’t know where else to go,” she mumbled.
“You’re always welcome here.”
Scully sat up and wiped her tears away. She forced a tight smile to her face. “I know.”
He slid a hand alongside of her cheek, using his thumb to catch a tear that slipped out.
“Want to tell me what happened?”
She shook her head slightly. “Not yet.”
Mulder drew her into him. She shut her eyes, ear pressed to his chest. He planted a tender kiss to the top of her head as she listened to the beat of his heart.
