It was his work. The fire was deliberate. He knew that. There were no words, no way of making this better. All of it was gone.
Except Scully.
She was right there by his side. He still had her and even without the X-Files, she was going to remain there.
There was no overreaction. There was no cursing, no yelling, no weak attempt to save what had not been burned.
Without her, he was certain he would have made some poor choices in the aftermath. With her, he was not alone and that thought cooled the bubbled burning inside of him.
