An odd, tingling buzz crept along her skin as she walked through the strangely blue lit cave. A sable haired girl stopped walking, pulled out a strange thin machine from her pocket and slid it open.

“Hmm... there are a few electric-types around here…” she murmured to herself, perusing the contents of her machine before she slipped it back into her jacket pocket.

She smirked and scanned the cavern she was in, before she saw a large dust cloud forming a few metres away from her. I wonder what I’ll find in there, she thought as she pulled a red and white spherical capsule from a place on her belt and pushed the release button.

“Come on out, Hikozaru!” she grinned as she tossed the Pokéball into the air, which opened and from it popped a large, white ape-like Pokémon with a flowing, burning fire mane. The girl and her Infernape charged into the puff cloud of dust when out emerged a mole Pokémon with shovel-like claws.

“What’s this?” the girl wondered aloud as she hastily pulled out her Pokédex once more.

Almost at once, the mechanical encyclopaedia registered the new Pokémon’s data. It read: “Drilbur, the Mole Pokémon. It makes its way swiftly through the soil by putting both claws together and rotating at high speed.”

The corners of the girl’s mouth curled into a smile as she pointed to the wild Pokémon and cried out, “Hikozaru, use Flamethrower!”

Instantly, the monkey Pokémon took a deep breath before letting out a large jet of pure fire, aimed at the newly discovered Pokémon. The Drilbur, which was at first curious, flung dirt at Hikozaru in defence before it dug down into the ground, disappearing from sight.

“Dammit,” Blanche cursed under her breath. Her Infernape hung its head in shame, but was caught by surprise when the wild Drilbur suddenly reappeared behind it. It scratched at Hikozaru with Metal Claw before following up with Fury Swipes.

The trainer reacted on instinct, telling her Pokémon to jump back and use Flamethrower once more. Again, her Infernape let out a jet stream of flaring fire, hitting the wild Pokémon on its claws - its weak spot. The Drilbur collapsed from the pain and Blanche pulled a Pokéball from her green leather shoulder bag before she threw it at the exhausted Pokémon.

“Yes!” she exclaimed with glee, thrusting her new companion up into the air. Blanche turned to her Infernape and squeezed it, being mindful of its fire mane. “We did it, Hikozaru, we have another Unova region Pokémon friend!”

Hikozaru grinned and nuzzled its nose into her shoulder. Placing the Drilbur Pokéball into an empty slot on her belt, Blanche stood, holding her chin with her thumb and index finger, wondering whether to return to Driftveil City or to continue forward to the next town. Finally, she decided with the latter and cocked her head to Hikozaru as she smiled.

“I’ll let you stay outside as we traverse to the next town… whatever it’s called,” she beamed, and then getting excited, pulled out the remaining three Pokéballs from her belt and released the Pokémon inside. “Come on out everybody! Yuki! Leafia! Muma!”

From the Pokéballs emerged, respectively, a Frosslass, a Leafeon and a Misdreavus. The newly released Pokémon crowded around their trainer, jubilant that they were given time to be outside in a new environment.

As Blanche and her party trekked through the electricity charged tunnels, they ran into many challenging trainers and some more disturbing rumours. After battling and winning against Ace Trainer Corky, he told her of a group of trainers declaring themselves as Team Plasma, who proclaimed that they would “liberate” Pokémon from their trainers and create a Pokémon Utopia, that passed through the Chargestone Caves.

Blanche narrowed her eyes, as anger once again crawled through her body. “Seriously? Here as well?”

Corky nodded, bitterness in his voice as he answered.

“They seem to be jumping anybody with Pokémon, not really caring whether they are trainers or not. It really makes me pissed off that people would be doing that!” He cried out, his emotions getting the better of him.

The female trainer nodded feverishly, wholeheartedly agreeing with his outburst.

“They didn’t jump you, did they?” she asked disquietly, stepping closer, instinctively moving her hand over her belt to ensure her Pokémon were safely in their Pokéballs.

He shook his head, almost with relief. “No, luckily they didn’t. Though, honestly I don’t know why I’m worried,” he arched an eyebrow at her, a knowing grin on his face. “I mean, I doubt they would be as strong as you are.”

“Oh, but my Pokémon aren’t really…” Blanche laughed meekly, a blush on her cheeks.

“Seriously,” he continued, making her face become a rich tomato red. “You really are quite the trainer. I doubt my Whimsicott would have stood long against your … Infernape, was it? That was one tough Pokémon.”

She shook her head vigorously, so much so that Corky was afraid she would strain her neck and it would just fall of her shoulders.

“N-No no no…” Blanche stuttered, continuing to be severely modest. “I mean, yes, Hikozaru is strong, but that’s because of Hikozaru’s hard work and all the sweat he’s put into well, um, training.”

“Yes, but-” The Ace Trainer began before being cut off by the humble trainer’s waterfall of sputters.

“I mean, I’ve had Hikozaru for a long time - when he was just a little Chimchar - and he was so cute then, if you want I can show you some-”

“Blanche, come with me,” Corky interrupted, a serious undertone in his voice as he pulled her away from the open space and hiding her behind one of the floating, magnetic boulders.

“What is it, Corky?” the sable haired trainer whispered, peeking over his shoulder.

“It’s that strange trainer - the one with long green hair,” he replied in a soft voice.

Blanche stared at the back of Corky’s head of bright blue locks, before turning her eyes to the newcomer. “What’s so weird about him?”

“Well, this is just talk I’ve heard on my journey, but he usually hangs around those Plasma jerks, and they don’t try to snatch his Pokémon off him,” Corky muttered, narrowing his eyes at the trainer.

“Really?” Blanche blinked. “Then that must mean he’s in cahoots with them!”

Corky turned around, confused. “‘Cahoots’?”

“Oh you know, it’s like-” Blanche stopped when they heard footsteps coming from deep in the cave - fast, unnerved footsteps - as if someone was running cheerfully through the caverns.

From the stairs a teenage girl of about their age appeared, wearing short denim shorts, a black vest and white shirt underneath. Her long, bouncy, brown hair was tied in a ponytail and flowed from the opening in the back of her cap.

As she sprinted towards the end of the tunnel, she stopped in her tracks while the green haired stranger stood with one hand akimbo.

“I’ve been expecting you,” he started slowly, with what looked like a smirk on his lips.

“Hmph,” the girl smirked in return, as a hand shot into her bag. “And I you.”

She pulled a Pokéball out of her pink shoulder bag and threw it in the direction of her opponent.

“Come out, Pignite!” she exclaimed as a large orange pig Pokémon appeared, letting out a loud snort.

“Hmph.” The teenage boy smirked as he coolly threw out a Pokéball and out emerge a large blue rock-like Pokémon with jutting orange crystals covering its body.

“Iron Defense,” he directed in an easy tone.

“Take Down!” the girl exclaimed enthusiastically, the echoes of which caused wild Joltik to scamper away.

As the two Pokémon battled, Corky and Blanche observed from the sidelines, watching with fixated eyes. The black haired female pulled her Pokédex out of her pocket, pointing it the rock Pokémon. The Pokédex entry read: “Boldore, the Ore Pokémon; because its energy was too great to be contained, the energy leaked and formed orange crystals.”

The Ace Trainer glanced back at her and as he caught sight of the mechanical encyclopaedia, his eyes widened.

“Is that… a Pokédex?” he gasped.

Blanche grinned, “Yeah. I got it from Professor Juniper of Nuvema Town.”

“Really?” the blue haired teenager blinked, amazed. “Aren’t Pokémon Professors picky about who they give their Pokédexes out to?”

“Actually, I-”

Blanche was cut off by a large burst of fire and both trainers’ attention was pulled back to the battle between the brunette and the green-haired trainer. The girl was pointing heatedly at the male trainer, and shouting moves to her one Pokémon army.

Her Pignite complied with fervour to equal its trainer’s as it dealt blow after blow on the green-haired teenager’s team. After his last Pokémon was wiped out, the strange boy returned it to its Pokéball and stared deep into the girl’s eyes as she recalled hers.

“It was strange… listening to your Pokémon’s thoughts as we battled…” he murmured, so quietly that both Corky and Blanche barely heard him.

The girl stood with arms akimbo, watching him expectantly.

“What did my Pignite say?” she asked, as if she actually believed the bizarre claim the male trainer made.

“It was enjoying the battle… and was happy that it won even though it sustained injuries,” he replied, as Corky and Blanche gawked at the scene before them in astonishment.

“I…” the girl began, taking a step forward with a hint of uncertainty. “I know why you are doing this N…” she faltered off as she took another step closer.

“You are strong, Pokémon Trainer White,” the trainer named N murmured, continuing as if he did not hear her. “I still have yet to understand why your Pokémon enjoy being used… but I am starting to, I think, as I am using a trainer’s barbaric means to do that…”

“N, if you just let me help you -” White began, reaching her hand out as she approached him.

“I look forward to when I see you again, Pokémon Trainer White,” N stated in a definite manner as he turned and began walking to the blinding exit of the cave. “I will… become stronger… for myself and for my friends.”

With no further words, he left, leaving the female trainer named White speechless and staring at her feet. She seemed crestfallen that N would not pay any heed to her words, either because he did not hear them or because he did not want to.

As Corky made a move to comfort or talk to her, Blanche held him back, baffling the Ace Trainer.

“Why shouldn’t we talk to her?” he asked, somewhat loudly, looking back at the sable haired trainer.

“Well, for one thing, she’s gone,” Blanche answered plainly.

Corky, at first taken aback, spun in the direction of the girl named White and saw that she had, indeed, vanished. His shoulders slumped in disappointment before he gazed back at Blanche with sheepish eyes.

“Well, I guess Moguryuu has waited long enough…” the female trainer sighed, her hand intuitively incubating the Pokéball of the freshly caught Pokémon. She moved away from the comfort of their hiding spot and walked candidly towards the bright opening.

The Ace Trainer followed her before stopping at the area where the odd battle took place, contemplating what he had just witnessed. Blanche called out to him as she waved from the exit where foreign sunlight poured into the eerie blue caverns.

The two shaded their eyes from the glaring sunlight as they bid farewell to Chargestone Cave and before their eyes stood the coveted Pokémon Centre. Filled to the brim with elation, Blanche rushed towards the building but was stopped short when Corky called out to her.

“Hey!” he shouted.

She moved to face him and called out just as loudly, “What? If you don’t mind, I kind of have a fainted Pokémon on my hands!”

He ran up to her, a smile spread on his face from ear to ear.

“You told me before our match, that you wanted to travel the Unova region right?”

“Yes…?” she replied cautiously.

“We should travel together, don’t you think?”

He spoke with such chirp and assurance that it did not seem to fit his cool, indifferent demeanour.

Blanche stood with a glazed stare, before she closed her eyes and said flatly, “No.”

With that, she turned tail and continued casually towards the Pokémon Centre. Disheartened, Corky turned back towards the Chargestone Cave when he was overcome by a heavy and strong force that charged at his back.

“Of course we should travel together, doofus!” came a bouncy cry from a familiar voice.

As Blanche wrapped her arms around him, Corky carried her over to the Pokémon Centre.

“You know Blanche…” Corky began contentedly.

“Hmm?”

“…You should lose weight.”

“Corky, dear, do you want to travel together or not?”
