[Surprisingly, Red's not paying attention to his immediate surroundings. He's keeping an eye on the ocean, on the path behind him, and occasionally on his own feet when he gets tired of swerving off of the beaten path he's been following.

He doesn't notice the other boy until he speaks - and even then, there's a moment of cocking his head and trying to figure out what direction the sound came in. When he does spot him - well, he freezes.]
