Just finished watching the Angel Beats anime, and it's seriously an emotional roller coaster. Already from the start it swings between high tension and slapstick humor.
The basic plot of the anime is that everyone is dead, and are in a sort of afterlife. This leads to some crazy situations like the protagonist being stabbed through the chest when he asked for proof that he can't die if he's already dead. Also, for some reason, the afterlife looks like a generic high school, with the main characters of the story being a group of militant... Well, "delinquents" isn't really the right word, because they are more like the Haruhi Brigade.
But basically they're a group of students who are set on not being model students, because taking school seriously causes you to "be obliterated". And I call the militant because they have a shitload of guns, which they use to fight against the student council president, who they refer to as Angel because she's working for "God" against their group, which has the goal of taking over the afterlife and - basically it's a crazy awesome mess.
Then you find out that everyone in that afterlife are there because they could not accept their (usually short) lives, especially their youth, and you get to hear some of their stories.
The leader of their group had two younger sisters and a younger, who she loved very much. One day when their parents were out some robbers broke into their house. They started tearing through the place looking for valuables, but when they didn't find anything they came up with this idea:
"You're the oldest, right? So you should know where your parents keep their valuables, right. Bring them to us, or we will shoot one of your siblings ever ten minutes."
The police didn't get there until half an hour later.
(I don't really consider that a major spoiler. It's in the second episode.)
A bit later, they are running "Operation: High Tension" which basically means everyone has to act hyper in whatever they do. The "mission briefing" was "If you're going somewhere, run. Guzzle when you drink juice. Scream when you talk. And remember to smile."
This leads to things like one of the members of a band grabbing her guitar, screaming about how she'll go write a new song, jump-kicking the door to splinters and running off after some serious head banging, while the others are yelling about how YOUTH IS ALL ABOUT X (and they change X at the drop of a hat, because it's fine as long as they're hyped about SOMETHING. Like they're heading towards the field to play baseball BECAUSE YOUTH IS ALL ABOUT BASEBALL, but they are reminded that class is about to star-THAT'S FINE TOO! BECAUSE YOUTH IS ALL ABOUT STUDYING!)
Throughout the entire episode, there is a "tension meter" in the corner swinging up and down based on how hyped everyone is at the moment. In class it swings between 2-3 to somewhere about 60-70 when they start yelling about things like Marie Antoinette being "a moe heroine" or how awesome steam engines are. When they go clean the hallway ("Let's not rely on those flimsy mops because REAL MEN USE RAGS!" "I trained my body for the sole purpose of using rags!") the meter rises to 86, and fall again to ~7 when the "straight man" of the group silently comments on how ridiculous the entire idea actually is.
Almost right after that we're back in flashback mode, retelling the story of yet another miserable life.
And in the same episode, you also see this.
Which was the reason I wanted to find the anime in the first place, because the scene is just so "What the flying fuck?"
Seriously. Emotional roller coaster. But it was really great to watch, though.
Too bad the end was "well, everything is fine and things have worked out for the bes-No.. No"! Nonononononono... GOD DAMMIT! Why did it have to end like that?! ;_;"
Or rather, it's not BAD. Just... I would have preferred it to be a true happy ending instead of one final twist that... Well, just watch the anime.
