Ash cleared his throat.
“So, Ash,” Cilan began. “What did you want to talk about?”
Ash did not respond. Cilan could wait; they had all afternoon. This was a good chance to look at him, since Ash stared at the ground. After that...outburst he had over the hidden flavors of using a Pokémon with a type disadvantage in battle when they first met, Cilan tried to never let their eyes meet directly for more than about two seconds. Not only did those big honey-brown eyes of Ash’s make him feel faint, but his own were equally unusual - not for their beauty, but for Cilan’s defect. Everybody said they never noticed, but...
Cilan hated to complain, but it seemed a little unfair to him. Chili and Cress (or at least their eyes) were normal, why were Cilan’s sceleras slighted alone? It made his eyes look bloodshot all the time, like he had always just been crying. Yes, again, everyone claimed they never noticed...but Chili and Cress saw him every day, and the friends and strangers had to just be sparing his feelings, didn’t they, because it jumped out of the mirror at him every time he looked.
“It’s just...” Ash spoke, then stopped and looked back at the grass. “I’ve never had to talk about this with anyone.”
Cilan was not surprised. “Take your time, Ash. I’m listening.”
“And I am the one who invited you out here, but you’re the one who looked at me first,” said the boy. He had a point, Cilan really should go first or at least help Ash start.
“Ash, I...”
Ash looked up from the flirting Pidove at him with what one could call expectant indignation.
“I realize my attention may surprise you or that you may find it a bit off-putting, but my admiration for the unique flavor you bring to Pokémon battles and...to life...to everything, Ash, it...my appetite for--”
“Cilan,” said Ash, suddenly serious. Intense, even. He studied Cilan’s face with his mouth pressed into a line. Cilan’s heart leapt.
“Yes~?”
“Your eyes,” said Ketchum, fascinated.
And Cilan’s heart fell right back down. “What about them?”
”They’re the same color as your--”
“My skin. Yes.”
Ash failed to notice Cilan’s annoyed tone. Instead he marveled. “That’s so cool! I just never noticed it before now...” He gawked, even, with an utterly insensitive (thought Cilan) grin.
Not even a compliment from the object of his attention could make ease his embarrassment. Now it was his turn to stare at the Pidove. “I’m aware of them, yes.”
Ash frowned. “Cilan, hey, it’s not like it’s a big deal or anything. I still like y--”
“It’s is a big deal to me,” Cilan said stiffly. “You’re not the one who has to go out with them every day.”
“Nobody notices stuff like that,” said Ash. His hand on Cilan’s shoulder went unnoticed as well.
“Yes they do.” Was Cilan pouting? Not quite. More like stewing. Steaming, perhaps.
“I promise they don’t, I found out firsthand!”
“Just because you didn’t notice--”
“No, I mean, my eyes used to be black!”
“...what?”
“Yeah!” said Ash. “It was actually right before we met! They were black as anything, and then right before I left Pallet Town for the Unova region they turned brown! And you know what happened?”
“What?” Cilan thought he was making up a story, but humored him. For now.
“Nobody noticed!” said Ash. “Not even my mom!”
“Surely they did,” said Cilan. “They just didn’t say anything.”
“My mom’s not the type of person who--”
“But thank you,” Cilan added, in a softer voice. “That actually does make me feel better.”
“You’re welcome,” Ash smiled.
The Pidove flew away all at once, leaving just Ash and Cilan’s shadows on the grass. Cilan looked down, casually, and noticed that Ash was sitting a little closer to him on the park bench.
