It was improbable at best. A new life, a new start, a chance to begin again. It had been easy to dissolve the rest of the guild. It hadn't even been that hard to make sure it was done peacefully. What was hard was packing up what hadn't been sold, cashing in all of the things that had been in her family for years. Silver and gold trinkets that hadn't seen fresh air for her entire lifetime, dinner tables and couches that had been staples of her world for just as long, all had to go, except what she could carry.
How had her family collected so much stuff? Getting it packed was hard enough, but some of that stuff was heavy! She watched as the movers struggled with a box full of gold plates that one of her more batshit great uncles had purchased. In a way, she was well rid of it.
The days flew by, and soon everything that was important, but easy to carry was in her room. It was a lot of stuff. Definitely too much to fit in the two bags she'd allowed herself. So she slowly went through everything, meticulous as always. No weapons. That was new. She felt naked, and worried a bit. But she resisted the urge to put them back on, or to pack them. No fine jewelry, which wasn't a big deal. No rich clothing, no fancy or expensive toys. No laptop, no cell phone, no nothing. Even her engagement and wedding ring went into the sell pile, and all of her photoalbums and pictures went resolutely into the trash.
There. Two bags. She was no longer an assassin, no longer a leader, and totally, completely free. It was terrible. What in the world did a 27 year old with nothing but a GED and willingness to work do in the world?
She was obviously going to die. But that was okay. She was going to die someday anyway.
So she took the last box, and set it in the truck, packing her bags next to her. The things she would sell, and then set the money aside. Hopefully it would be enough to get her started. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad after all.
The city had never looked so warm and inviting as it did in her rear view mirror. The shop she went to was in Lafayette, and from there she was going. . .somewhere. From now on, she was a stranger in a strange land, and hoped that this hadn't all been a mistake.
