We all know I love fashion! Heck, I wanted to be a costume designer and now I am teaching a fashion program to kids. So when an awards show come around, aside from going crazy over trying to get better than 50% on my guesses, I am always most excited about the clothes.
If other people can be critics, why can't I? So I give you my
Golden Globes 2013 Best and Worst Dressed List!
BEST
It was actually hard to come up with a Best-dressed list because everything this year, I thought, was fairly... meh. Nothing struck me as all that spectacular and anything unique was just way too out there (as you shall see in the Worst-dressed half).
It's clear that red, black and nude/beige colours were the trends this year, as were sparkly and sequined dresses. Some people managed to pull off both (Jennifer Garner) and some people who usually look AMAZING ended up looking not-that-great trying to (Sofia Vergara - such a disappointment!).
But wading through the pictures from the red carpet, I found these ones that I quite liked:
SALLY FIELD:
Sally Field chose a colour that didn't go with the trends of the night, but that looked really good! The style is classy, but with a sexy-ish cut without being slutty or inappropriate.
AMANDA SEYFRIED
I am a fan of lace and this dress just fits so very nicely on Amanda Seyfried. She looks great and pulls off the light colour well, where some people (Amy Adams) had ones much too close to their skin colour (at least on TV).
AMY POEHLER:
Both hosts looked fantastic - Tina Fey looked especially great during the show in her turquoise dress - but on the red carpet Amy Poehler was the winner between the two of them. I just love the classiness of the suit with the
CLAIRE DANES:
I am not a fan of Claire Danes, but I have to give her massive kudos on looking this good a month after giving birth! Part of me doesn't even believe it! I think the middle portion, the way it is draped, was especially smart of the designer because it hides anything she still does have going on and makes us all say "WOW you did NOT just have a baby!" Kudos, indeed.
ZOOEY DESCHANEL:
Following along the red-dress trend of the evening we have Zooey Deschanel, who pulled off a very pretty princess-esque dress that was comparable to that of an actual Golden Globe winner from the night, but much less awkward (you shall see in a bit if you don't know already).
JESSICA ALBA:
The colour looks strange and pale in pictures, but I have a feeling it looked better in person (especially given what so many entertainment reporters have said). Jessica Alba rarely ever does anything wrong, and this style looks great on her - again, for a mother especiall amazing. I like that she opted for a chunky necklace too because you hardly ever see people do that (or do it right).
MEGAN FOX:
And my favourite of the night, Megan Fox who - AGAIN - how did you just have baby not that long ago?! She looks fantastic and that dress is beautiful in its lacy glory. I feel like the bodice could've been a little nicer, but the entire look is just lovely.
WORST:
Trying to narrow this down was SO hard because there were more than a few that I was not a fan of, but here we go...
DEBRA MESSING:
Better name for her would be "Debra Messy"! What a terrible dress, especially the bottom which is just doing crazy things and going all over the place.
EMILY MORTIMER:
Seems that high necks, sleeves and sequins were all popular yesterday, but putting them all together just comes across as some sort of alien-outfit.. It's just too much!
HALLE BERRY:
Speaking of too much... Apparently it was 13 degrees in LA yesterday, which for them is cold. I suppose cold has no affect whatsoever on Halle Berry because she's walking around like she's out in sweltering summer beach weather! The slit's too high, plus the cutout on the side and the pattern has too much going on. It's just a mess - and it actually makes me glad to hear that people are calling her out on this not being great rather than just gushing over her because she's Halle Berry.
ROSARIO DAWSON and JESSICA CHASTAIN
Both in powder blue and both wearing extremely ill-fitting dresses! Jessica Chastain and Rosario Dawson are also both very pretty, which makes their choices even more disappointing. Rosario Dawson's is too tight in the wrong spots and Jessica Chastain's is MUCH too loose - they should have discussed and gone to see a tailor together!!
JULIANNE HOUGH:
This dress reminds me of tissue paper we have at home to put in gift bags that has colourful confetti pieces on it. I am not fond of that tissue paper and I am not at all fond of this dress either. Her hair isn't helping the situation. I also felt like everyone on E! had to be really nice about her dress (though I don't know if they were on Fashion Police because Joan Rivers is never really nice to anyone lol), all because Ryan Seacrest was there AND is their boss! Can't go around talking down about the boss' girlfriend now can we? Also helps for her that she can wear whatever she wants and get a pass from that network too then.
SIENNA MILLER:
I know she said her reasoning for this dress was to get a 60s vibe because of her role in the Hitchcock TV movie The Girl, but this looked too much like a costume than an actual dress for an outing.
ARIEL WINTER:
Given all of the controversy surrounding this girl and her battles with her mom lately, I can see why her publicists might have said "go for something young!" But this looks MUCH too young for a girl turning 15 this year - especially when you look at
what she wore last year, which was much more mature (but not over-the-top for her age). I actually feel like if she'd swapped them, wore 2012's this year and this one last year, that would have made more sense. All I could think seeing her, though, was that they were trying really hard to get her young image out there again.
OLIVIA MUNN:
I have to say, aside from her brief part i Magic Mike, I have no clue what this girl is famous for and seeing her in this outfit... I'm thinking it's not her fashion sense. This is one of those dresses that I just dislike based on personal style completely - I'm sure there are people who love it, but seeing the top part on video/in interviews, it looked almost like shells and I just really didn't like it. It's not horrible compared to other dresses (at other events too), but just wasn't my cup of tea - it actually made her look quite old (apparently she is only 32).
LENA DUNHAM:
I hear Lena Dunham is hilarious and her show is really good, but this was a poor choice for her first Golden Globes dress ever. She said herself in an interview with Ryan Seacrest that one wrong move and the whole dress shifts inappropriately, revealing things she shouldn't be revealing on a red carpet (but apparently does often on her show!). Considering she had to do a lot of sitting, standing and walking to get her two awards, probably not the best idea to have such a finicky dress!
CONFUSING:
That's right, I have a "Confusing" category - for all the ones I was on-the-fence about and/or I know have caused divides between people after the fact.
JENNIFER LAWRENCE:
Looking from Zooey Deschanel's dress to Jennifer Lawrence's, they're similar in the sense of being red-hued princess-esque styles. The problem with Jennifer Lawrence's is that if she turns sideways, you see this weird pointy-chest thing she has going on. From the front it looks perfect and classy, but it looks so strange from the side.
RACHEL WEISZ:
I feel like this is a dress I would have designed as a joke/funny dress either when I was young or nowadays for a "Future Fashion" in my fashion program! It would have been a nice dress with just the top, I really don't like the bottom.
LUCY LIU:
This dress has had people very divided - personally, I like the style of it, but hate he pattern. It looks like a Kleenex box or curtains or an old blanket! And yet, some people out there really love this outfit - pattern and all!
Ahhh but such is the fun of fashion and awards shows!
