So here's what's been going on with our little furry terrorist... if you've got experience with cats and could offer any advice, I'd appreciate your two cents on this.

The fundamental question being, is my vet a moron? )

Okay, her reply, word for word:

OK, the cat. I would get an ultrasound. Yes, there are cats that can have lymphoma of a certain type that will linger around for that long, but that is the exception rather than the rule. I would think if that were the case, it would be an inflammatory bowel disease that can become lymphoma in some instances. But, just as an aside, lymphoma is not necessarily some brutal killer, but can be a disease that presents like this cat. So, I wouldn't say the vet is a complete moron. However, I would have pancreatitis high on my list. That isn't something that you can test for on bloodwork and you need a good ultrasonographer to evaluate it (not some general practitioner that does a few ultrasounds a month in their practice). The anemia (low red cell count) can just be due to chronic disease.

I would not be as panicked about the prednisone. Cats drink it like water- they do not have the same side effects (generally) as we do (or dogs, horses, etc). But, it does sound like things are progressing and if the pred isn't helping right now, wean him off and get him in to someone they are comfortable with.

Hope that is helpful in any small way.
