Summary: Martin can't stand it.

It was raining again, pouring. Martin was asleep but, as usual, he woke every hour, on the hour. His face was sketched into a look of despair and yet, it seemed he did not wish to awaken. He tossed and turned, dreaming, imagining, visualizing that he was the reason for Daniel’s disappearance and that he has murdered the Dane. He finally awoke, blanketed in swear and sobbed hard. He curled up into fetal position and willed sleep to wash over him. It never did. He was somehow aware of every sound, every movement around him. It scared him, and yet he found comfort in his wife’s breathing, imagining it was the Dane there beside him. Martin closed his eyes and sighed, the darkness around him engulfing him, swallowing him. He begged, pleaded with his soul to allow him to sleep, alas to no avail. The realisation of nothing-ness caused a violent sob to spread like a fire through his body. He was nothing, had nothing because he’d lost everything. He could hardly speak, he worked on a mental rota and he cried almost constantly. There was nothing left of him anymore, he was just a shadow of the man he once was: a happy, talented footballer with a gorgeous wife, beautiful child and an adoring boyfriend. He sighed, tears dripping down his unshaven cheeks, his hair long and tangled. Who was he now? He certainly wasn’t Martin Škrtel because martin Škrtel was tough, strong, powerful…. Overwhelming. This feeble excuse was broken, torn apart from the inside and looking for answers to questions that didn’t exist. If Daniel was alive, if Daniel came back, he concluded, the Dane would never recognise the Slovak anyway. And that realisation, however impossible it seemed, broke
Martin’s heart further.
