So...I work in a field called Child Life. The goal of this field is to help children and their families cope with the various stresses of life. My particular interests are dance and art therapy.

This week I had the unique opportunity to work with children who have experienced Hurricane Katrina. It was a very eye opening experience and a powerful lesson in how art allows for not only the expression of fear, pain and despair; but also, the expression of hope, resiliency, and agency. After any cataclysmic event, there is the natural tendency to posit those with first-hand experience as the victim , those who have been displaced as the refugee. But this terminology denies the agency of these people.
