Well things are at least still chugging along. Hopefully my writing will come back to me, as of right now its still a chore to even attempt to write an email, but I’ll keep being positive. *big silly grin ( Read more... )

Yeah, a couple at least. :D I'm getting ready to head off to BayCon -- laundry's in the wash, suitcases dragged out, shuttle coming way too early in the morning to go to the airport [flail] but I love BayCon and I'm looking forward to it.

And I'm giving you a run-down anyway, for your own good. Every fanwriter should know about this. :/

FanLib is a company with three million in venture capital and ties to the entertainment industry. They started a web site meant to be a multi-fandom fanfic archive, with a lot of ads and some sponsored (by TV studios so far) fanwriting events, for the purpost of making back their three million dollar investment plus enough profits to keep the investors happy. The're being very blatant about this, with press releases and lots of glaring lights and blowing horns because they need a metric fuckload of traffic to collect money on ad hits.

IOW, they're trying to make serious profits -- in the millions -- on fanfic and are drawing all sorts of attention to themselves.

This is begging for a lawsuit and if a case does go to court it'll be based on someone who's making money off of fanfic, not on all of us who just do it for free and for fun. If fanfic is judged to not be fair use, based on this FanLib crap, we're all screwed.

There's more but that's the most important part.

More pleasant news, more and more fan writers are going pro with original fiction, either original-original or fanfic with the serial numbers filed off. chaosmanor's been doing it for a little while as laney_cairo but also aaron_michaels (I think that's Jassy), dvlspencer, rhianne_aile, lucialogan> (I think that's Arieltachna) and <lj user=. I'm awful with names, remembering who is which pseudonym and such, and the only one I'm sure of is Chaosmanor <--> Laney Cairo [duck] but all the others are people in fandom whose fic I've read. Torquere Press seems popular and some of the others are with Dreamspinner Press. I think it's incredibly cool whan fanwriters can step up and start making some money. :)

And I've been writing like crazy! [laugh/flail] I've made more story posts so far this year than I had in the whole previous time I've been on LJ, not counting RPG posts. I did NaNoWriMo last November and it sort of goosed the engine or something. :D

Hope you're feeling better and that your own writing comes back soon. Take care, hon! [hugz]
