As resilient as the Braves have been this postseason, the talk of the country is Avery. After a disastrous rookie season last year, he really hasn't blossomed until the last two months. But oh, how he has dazzled the league since then, turning opposing hitters into nut cases. Take the Pirates' Andy Van Slyke, who, like most of his teammates, couldn't get the ball out of the infield against Avery.
"If I have to face him the next five or six years," Van Slyke said afterward, "I'm going to call in sick every time. I'm going to say I have Averyitis. Or Poison Avery. He's that good."
