It is a truly amazing feeling to wake up on October 1st and know there will still be baseball games to play.
First of all, you all thought I was nutso for my crushiness on Tommy Glavine. But there was
a METHOD TO MY MADNESS. Oh Tom, thanks for being such an awesome secondary oldman boyfren. Second-shortest will do. I figured I'd cry when he retires, but if he retires after THIS YEAR, I'm gonna lol so hard, guys. Again, oh Tom.
ALSO, I owe the Florida Marlins an apology. I doubted you with good reason, boys. But you proved me wrong, as you tend to do. You guys coulda packed it up after Maine's outstanding performance on Saturday, but you didn't, you came out swinging against a future Hall-of-Famer. Many many thanks, and even though you've been horrendous this season, I'm glad I was there to see the ups amongst the many many downs. You'll be okay, you will.
For
beckydr and all others interested,
everywhereinla posted a celebration picspam over in her LJ. And WPVI has about two minutes
of the locker room celebration as well as other footage up on the Phillies section.
It's funny, you know? You don't quite realize how magic it's been until it's over.
How long has it been? 14 years, yes. But think about it this way, the last time we were in the playoffs? There was no such thing as an LDS. And sure, we didn't win it that year, but no one thought we would go as far as we did, except the team.
And this year, same thing, no one gave us a chance against the mighty mighty Mets, especially with being plagued by injury, including two of our three All-Stars from this year, Chase and Cole, and our All-Stars from last year, Flash and Ryan (and Chase). I knew we had had 19 DL stints amongst the team this year, but I didn't know that the only other teams with that many this year were the Rangers and the Royals, as I learned from FOX yesterday. Where are they? Where were they? So yes, the Mets collapsed, but we weren't even supposed to be this close in the first place, not with Howard and Utley and Cole and Shane and Flash and Myers among others getting hurt, not with our makeshift pitching staff. Our starting rotation on Opening Day? Myer (quickly got moved to closer and then was hurt ) , Hamels (phenomonal but got hurt in SEPTEMBER OF ALL TIMES),Eaton (hurt and sucked when he wasn't), Moyer (our only constant!), and Segovia (WHO?!) was the fill-in fifth starter.
I keep hearing how AWFUL the Mets bullpen has been this past month, but the first FIVE MONTHS, so was ours. If they weren't injured. So what the hell ever. You suck it up and you deal and you find a way to win. If one guy on the team isn't doing great (Pat), the other guys pick him up until he is (Rowand, Bourn). If someone gets hurt (Shane), other guys come out of nowhere and step it up (J-Dub [you embarrass me, Jayson])
But there are three guys in particular that I am SO happy for: Jimmy, Pat, and Jamie.
Jimmy and Pat? They came up through the organization together, and were here when we were at our worst, when we were pathetic (not that we haven't been pathetic many a time). If having cajones counts at all in winning MVP, Jimmy gets it hands down. He did whatever was needed to get this team to October, defensively, offensively, in the clubhouse. Started every game, batted third when he needed to without a complaint, walked the walk right out of the gate, and never ever ever had a doubt about what he said in Spring Training.
And I finally, finally...I understand why Pat didn't want to be traded. He could've gone somewhere where the playoffs is pretty much a given, but he wanted it here where it was so much sweeter after all the team's been through, through the years, and all he's been through. And I have to totally respect him for not turning on the fans when they were calling for him to pretty much be bound and gagged and tossed into the Delaware River. He has almost identical stats to last year but the heart he showed, and the way he's made adjustments in the second half, not looking at strikes, and stepping up with RISP, and when Chase went down, put him head and shoulders above last year. And that's all we wanted, Pat. For you to try. And you did and we couldn't love you more (even though you'll never be Pat the Glove).
Jamie. Oh, Jamie. His interview in the locker room was what really sent me over the edge. He got all choked up when they asked him about what it was like doing what he did for his hometown team, the team he rooted for growing up. He is one of the genuinely nicest guys that has ever played in this organization, and for him to get an opportunity to live out a dream like this, it's amazing.
My dad's picking me up a Daily News and an Inq on the way home from work today. I can't wait. Next post I'll have some articles, as well as some Mets-related articles. So I'll save all those gems. But this I wanted to share this with everyone..I told it to
lieinour_graves in my previous post:
there was an interview clip on ESPNews yesterday, with good ol' David Wright! saying how it's disappointing because "we know we're a better team."
Okay Davey you go know you're a better team while drowning your sorrows in a pint of ice cream, and crying with your hand in your pants this October.
I'm so glad this collapse
started to expose David as being SO FULL OF PC BULLSHIT. Thank GOD. "Blah blah blah METS METS METS OH BOY!" Shut the fuck up and get your head out of the Mets' ass.
I don't wanna say I have the right to be smug. But I am smug, the way we were all treated by Mets fans. To oh, just give up and give in, 'cause they're winnin' it this year and every year! They're the best (even though we've been better than them for a while, excluding last year!) so we should just stop supporting our Phils because it doesn't matter!
Well even if we hadn't won? Which fans stuck around till the end, always stick around to the end? And which fans bolted the moment they even sensed failure? I don't give a good goshdarn if people think we're rude and uncouth or whathaveyou, we're committed and passionate and you can't argue that.
Those Mets fans that stayed yesterday? They have my respect, completely. Those who left early? Well, they're probably buying their Yankee gear. So whatever.
Almost in closing, I meant to post this for the last couple entries but I kept forgetting because, you know. NL East Champions and all that good stuff. A while ago
lovingthecubs posted the promo commercials for the Rockies ("Thank you, Mr. Fuentes!" xD), and I'd been scouring around lookin' for the Phils' ones, and this whole time they were on their website. A-dur. So,
here they are! There's only three of them, but I think they're all pretty funny. My favorite is the way with Jamie and Chase.
And,in actual closing, as I told
owllover711 in my previous post: Whatever happens this postseason, happens. Sure, I'll be upset if they lose, be it the LDS or further on. I'm not gonna lie. I know it took 'em a few tries to win their first World Series so I have that to sort of comfort me, if need be.
But no matter what happens this October, I, and thousands of other fans, can finally, FINALLY, look back and not have the most recent playoff memory of this unsuccessful yet lovable franchise involve Joe Carter, and for that I will always ALWAYS treasure this team. I know, I know. "Leanne, stfu about 93." And maybe now I finally will.
