I haven't had much news to post in a little while. Had a double wedding weekend, and the one at which I was a bridesmaid was just lovely. Really. I forgot how after all the stress and strains are over, weddings can be damned fun. I left early though, and missed the grooms 92 year old grandmother getting rip-roaringly drunk and falling over and breaking her arm. The bride ran out in the rain to flag down the ambulance, and everyone was upset but it all turned out okay.

I thought that this was quite exciting though:

.....Another much-loved showrunner (particularly around these parts), Joss Whedon, has a little bit of interesting news too. Seems that all you “Buffy” fans can saddle up and get your excitement on because Whedon is getting ready to make a 90-minute TV movie with the BBC. That movie will be called “Ripper” and will focus on Anthony Stewart Head’s character Giles in his pre-“Buffy” days. No word on when production will begin, but with Whedon and Head already signed up, I expect it’ll be sooner rather than later. And in related news, y’all remember Whedon’s buddy Nathan Fillion, right? Well he’s confirmed his stint on the upcoming season of “Desperate Houswives,” along with Dana Delany, which leads me to wonder whether the show will be cancelled by November sweeps. Fillion’s track record ain’t so good, know what I’m saying? But maybe that would be for the best, because Fillion seems to be jonesing to team back up with his former “Firefly” boss, that same Joss Whedon guy I was just talking about. Seems Fillion’s written a couple of scenes of a new project that he won’t really discuss yet, and he’s sent the work over to Joss, trying to convince him to write it out into a full-blown project for Fillion to star in. The only hint Fillion would give is that it was a western, but a true-blood cowboys western as opposed to a space western. And while it surely may never see the light of day, since it’s not even a twinkle in the eyes of the development gods, it’s still an enticing notion, right?

It's more the first part that I think might be interesting, just because it's about time we had a bit of Whedon back on our screens (I'd have even gone to see Wonder Woman had it panned out). Though I do like Nathan Fillion, and he seems to be heading in a Deadwoody direction of some sort. And I've heard some awesome things about Deadwood, so even though it seems unlikely, it'd be cool to see it happen.

Am going to see Transformers tomorrow, so will report back eventually. I am so pleased at Shia LeBeouf, because I remember seeing him in Even Stevens a few years back, and remarking to the person next to me 'That kid is going to be big one day' like a wise old Hollywood sage. Even though I was ,say, fifteen at the time. But I just think he's charming, and even though he seems priviliged and middle-classish he's actually from Echo Park, and oh I don't know. I have a soft spot for the boy.

Also got another great second-hand book haul:

Beyond Black by Hilary Mantel- £2.
A Josephine Tey mystery for £1.50 (pretty hard to get hold of).
Carpe Juglum by Terry Pratchett £1.50.
It's decidedly bizarre that I actually went in there thinking, if Beyond Black is in here I'll definitely buy it. It's just a run-of-the-mill charity shop in a very small town centre, there's no reason for it to have books that I specifically want (though yes, literary bestsellers that go on 3for2s at Waterstones etc. have a possibility of turning up). It's more them turning up at the time I want them, like Un Lun Dun popping out of nowhere (and that was odd). As I have never been particularly lucky, I'm actually quite enjoying the sensation.

I remember reading somewhere a line by a critic that said 'If Terry Pratchett is skimmed milk, then Ursula Le Guin is double cream'. Which puzzled me, as I can't tell whether it's an acknowledgement of his social conscience, but saying Le Guin is more so, or that Pratchett lacks depth, and Le Guin swims in it. Slight or back-handed compliment? I can't decide.
