if trees die standing,
then I'm praying for roots to keep me upright
and leaves to keep me company, whispering
softly in the wind
disclosing all the secrets of man in the most silent fashion
I'd pray to be rooted near your home
to clean the air you curse me with
to hold the names of your lovers past
let you hide, wrapped in my appendages

if fish don't sleep
then I'm praying for gills;
so i can breathe when you flood me,
with doubt and infatuation
if i don't ever sleep then i won't miss a moment
floating with you in this sea
of blankets, sheets, and masked adoration
I'm praying for gills
so that i don't drown in expectations i can't fill

if an elephant never forgets
then I'm praying for thick skin,
so when they come my way,
their tounges like knives won't penetrate what we've made
keep us safe beneath skin and tusk
i'm praying i never forget
how you felt the first time, every time

if man is fallible
then i'm praying for forgiveness
with a past like a tsunami,
it's easy to be taken down, thrashed about,
and swallowed
i'm praying for the future
and how you'll be part of it.
if man is fallible,
then i'm right at home being human.
