Acceptance

I have never asked anyone to change to my beliefs or my way of life. I have only asked to that those around me know that it is me. If I be harmful to myself I certainly welcome the comments about my behavior but not me as a person. As you see acceptance of these are very different. Accepting me as person is all I have ever wanted. I am who I am and I change on a regular basis. My change occurs due to my behaviors. Some I see and control and others I may not until it is too late. Some call this a knee jerk response. I have had years and years with therapist for both me and my son and even my ex. One point that was always repeated is that a behavior is not a person. Don't hate the person hate the behavior. Try to reward and give positve feedback to good behaviors and to let others know that you do not like the behavior. I have raised my son this way and in doing so have a wonderful adult male child. He is intelligent, and warm and loving. But he still occassionally has behaviors that are not appropriate. These I let him know will not be tolerated. I try to accept everyone for who they are and not wanting to change them as that is thier job. Mine is simply to influence them with my behaviors. It does not mean that I have to like them or agree with them. It only means that acknowledge them as a person.

In reveiwing the synonyms and definitions I do not see where humans, behaviors, and acceptance are the same things. People or humans can be accepted for who they are but not the behaviors they exhibit. Since I am human I am not immortal and am fallible just like all others. Not better not worse. Last year my behaviors were appropriate to the best of my knowledge. And since I was lashed out at repeatedly I have lashed back which may or may not have been appropriate. It is not in my nature to mean to anyone unless they were mean to me first. Then my temper takes control of the situation and I exhibit defensive behaviors to those who try to hurt me. In my line of work I have had to learn to accept people for who they are. I try to give guidance. I have to read between the lines as not everyone is forthcoming. I use all of my senses to read people and situations. I have had power that others do not. I have been given an opportunity to control others thru situations. I am good at what I do and I am smart at what I do for others. But when it comes to me....I tend to be blinded very easily by emotions. Some that I can not always control. As a nurse everyone feels you can handle anything...not so I can not stand to see my own child suffer. That is my limitation. Otherwise I can and have done many things that others have marveled at. I have fixed things when those of greater power could not. Life threatening things. Time and time again I have been praised for my unusual abilities to see what is not there. And for assisting others in need. Does this mean I had to accept them? Yes it did to be able to see past the behavior that I may not condone or agree with. As a nurse I do not get to choose who I shall deal with and who I won't. I have to accept that they are human and have needs that I can provide for their survival. Hence my mind I try to keep as open as possible.
