Torchwood, S2

I just finished watching the second season of Torchwood. LJ ate my first post about it, and I heard the news about bin Laden between the time of my original post and now, so sharing it feels a bit anticlimactic. Given that, I'll just do a quick summary:

There were some powerful episodes this season, especially "Adam," which reminded me of Dollhouse's themes of memory and identity, and "Adrift," which was heartwrenching.

Regarding the season finale, my husband warned me that the show pulls no punches, and he was right. What happened to Owen: truly awful. What happened to Jack: unimaginably tragic and horrifying; what happened to Toshiko: sad, but better than some got.

According to this guide, I'm now supposed to get back to Doctor Who. I will, but I have to say that I kind of don't want to leave Torchwood. Perhaps I've just developed a strong preference for interesting ensemble casts over the years (I'm looking at you, Joss Whedon), but I really prefer the diversity of personalities there to the occasionally-dynamic duo of Doctor and Companion. However, I've been told that S4 of Doctor Who is quite good, and I do think I'll like Donna after my brief glimpse of her in the 2006 Christmas Special, so I'm cautiously optimistic.

I did find it interesting that at leighbc's recent surprise birthday dinner, I was pleasantly taken aback to find that she and her friend, Kim, agreed with me that, while we liked David Tennant as an actor, we simply weren't crazy about the Tenth Doctor. I felt somewhat validated by that, after all the debating I've done about the writing of the character with my spouse and others. However, proftlb has already brilliantly solved the problem by pointing out that the Doctor is in the stages of grief (proftlb is frequently brilliant in useful ways such as this :) ). I can live with #10 much better if I perceive him as being in the Anger stage, which makes total sense. We'll see where things go from here.
