Iron Man 2 and other movie thoughts

Coming attractions
While waiting for the movie to start, it occurred to me that we're approaching the ten year anniversary of the initial Lord of the Rings film. The Fellowship of the Ring debuted in the US on December 19th, 2001. Does anyone know if the studios plan to do an event commemorating this? It would be nifty to have a special showing of all three films as they've done before in selected theaters. (I didn't get to go the last time that happened.) I think it would be something to see the balrog on the big screen.

Other thoughts while waiting for the main event: Inception looks promising. Christopher Nolan directing this cast in this concept? Sign me up. There are things about the visuals that remind me of The Matrix, and a quick read on Wikipedia indicates that they implemented some fairly drastic measures to create the special effects. I just made a note on my calendar reserving July 16th.

Iron Man 2
Iron Man 2 was entertaining. I liked it a bit better than the first one, though I felt that Gwyneth Paltrow and Mickey Rourke both deserved more screen time for their characters. I would also have liked to know a bit more about Ivan Vanko. Sam Rockwell was suitably oily as Justin Hammer. I don't know what the truth is as to why they replaced Terrence Howard with Don Cheadle in the role of Lt. Colonel James Rhodes; the rumor mill says one thing; Howard says another. They're both talented actors, but such changes are usually jarringly noticeable, and that was the case here.

I was surprised to see that Justin Theroux penned the screenplay, and was all, "Huh. When did he move into writing?" but it appears that he penned Tropic Thunder as well, which I didn't recall.

I really liked the look of the film. Whoever designed the sets did a good job: the detailed props created a very believable atmosphere while remaining true to the comic book feel.

Finally, not to spoil, but if you haven't seen it yet, do stay until the end of the credits. (Click here if you want to know.) I have more thoughts on that, but I'll post them in the comments to prevent RSS readers from revealing what I would normally put behind an LJ-cut.
