Oh. Now I get it.

Dear Mr. Whedon:

I owe you an apology for my Tiny Voice of Doubt.

I'd been supportive of Dollhouse. I'd actively encouraged people to watch it. I'd believed, based on previous work, that you wouldn't let us down.

However, being honest, there was this tiny, nagging doubt. I mean, I would've continued to watch right through to cancellation. I'm loyal that way ... but I was prepared for this to be merely good instead of great, as some of your former work was. I was okay with that! Truly. Your characters and dialogue on an off day exceed many shows at their best.

I just wasn't in love from the get-go the way I was with Firefly. I don't mean to compare ... I know the saying about comparisons being odious. I mean, I felt like it was your most intelligent work -- I got the message part of it -- but it was kind of a hard sell to people, because while I was engaged, it was a troubling, dark story, and I couldn't lie to my friends and tell them it was wildly entertaining and full of witty dialogue. It was thought-provoking, but not so much with the giggles.

I knew Fox had tampered with the first half of the season quite a bit, and was absolutely prepared to excuse that. I was much more hopeful toward the end of the season. I was keeping my fingers very tightly crossed after the last episode with Alpha that the show got renewed.

Well, I just watched "Epitaph One."

I don't even care if that's the direction you end up going, because if you don't, it means you've come up with something even more compelling.

However, after watching it? I get it. I now understand. I'd sort of wondered about some of it already, so it makes even more sense in context. I saw the signposts, I just didn't see the road.

I'm thinking you were keeping it in reserve as a series ender, just in case they cancelled you. Now, it can just be a "what if?" one-off like "The Wish," or it can be part of the whole.

Again, really quite sorry about the Tiny Voice of Doubt. I mean, I felt much better during the second half of the first season, but ... well, I'm now fully on board. This is Joss that I recognize.

I've had the DVDs in my Amazon cart for ages, ready to commit. I just had sort of put it off.

Buying the DVDs now. Sorry. Shouldn't have had even the Tiny Voice.

Your brother's song was good, too. Not that I'm surprised at all by that, given Dr. Horrible, but just thought I'd add it, and blather some more praise in apology for, y'know, doubting.

Sorry.

Humbly,

Me

PS: Amy Acker is very talented, but you already know that.
