I just finally finished watching There Will Be Blood. Odd movie. Yes, Daniel Day-Lewis was formidable, but despite all the paralleling of brother relationships, despite the imperfect Cain and Abel motif, despite the lovely cinematography, I found it ponderous and strange. I think it was meant to be that -- there's no redemption for this character, and no agent to put down the dominant, mad alpha dog. Control and submission are the goals of the two major players, and neither of them are likable fellows. The movie denies us closeness with Plainview's adopted son, a character for whom we might feel pity, with a sudden jump forward in years and a quick tying-off of that storyline.
I don't know. To me, it seemed to be trying a bit too hard.
