The late, great sage, George Carlin

Jun 23, 2008 10:53

The irreverent and brilliant George Carlin is dead. It's odd - he'd just come up in conversation this past Friday with a co-worker -- we were talking about The Aristocrats, which I still need to see.

Outside of 9/11, I don't think I've ever seen so many people on my Friends list blog about the same topic in the same time window. I'm feeling particularly good about my Friends list in light of this.

I think I first saw Carlin around age 11 or 12, likely his Carlin at Carnegie special on HBO. I'm pretty sure that my parents were either out to dinner somewhere, or I had stayed up late and watched it after they'd gone to bed. (In my teen years, my parents were actually awesomely cool about my night owl tendencies.) I remember thinking that he was the sharpest, funniest comedian I'd ever seen. His witty, philosophical observations on human behavior were delivered with a wry Irish Catholic outlook that seemed totally New York and very urbane to my young, small Southern town eyes.

Just a couple of quotes:

"When evolution is outlawed, only outlaws will evolve."

The very existence of flamethrowers proves that sometime, somewhere, someone said to themselves, 'You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done'.

I don't know where he's going to be buried, but I wouldn't be surprised to see his grave covered with Buddy Christ dashboard statues and other mementos from his many fans.
