Glad to see that Christian compassion during the holidays ... oh, wait
Mike Huckabee is a former Baptist minister, so I think it is probably safe to assume that he celebrates Christmas, aka the birth of Christ. You know, the compassionate, hopeful, turn-the-other-cheek guy from the Bible -- the nice, non-wrathful fellow from the New Testament.
Somehow, I don't think Huckabee got the WWJD memo when he said that he wouldn't retract his 1992 statement advocating "isolating the carriers of the [HIV] plague."
His backpedaling statement that "we didn't know then what we know now" about how the disease is spread is a load of hooey. I can speak to this personally, because I was enrolled in a special medical ethics course for official academic credit at the University of South Carolina that year, which focused on nothing but the epidemiology and treatment of HIV. As the article states, way back in 1985, seven years before his statement, the CDC had released research results indicating that the virus is not transmitted by casual contact.
In other words, he made a statement that was at best ignorant back in '92, and now, fifteen years hence, knowing full well how ill-informed it was, he refuses to apologize or recant.
But we'll surely forgive your trespasses as you forgive those who trespass against you, Mr. Huckabee. After all, it is the Christmas season.
