Albuquerque theater bans babies from certain shows after 6 pmThis is interesting for several reasons. Does it mean that, after all the hand-wringing at the Oscars, movie theater owners are desperate enough for business that they're willing to exclude customers that they perceive to be a noise risk in order to retain the business of the quieter ( Read more... )

Actually, finding a trustworthy babysitter can be like organizing the Normandy Beach invasion. I think it's due to how many of us live these days, especially in urban areas.

Often, young families like ours live several states away from extended family that might serve as babysitters. Here in D.C. some families in our neighborhood formed a babysitting cooperative that operated on points (babysit to get points, get a babysitter to spend points), communicated mostly online and held monthly social events for all the families. We joined when Parker was born. It was a lifesaver. We could count on being able to get a babysitter and go out at least once a month.

Our neighborhood to be has a cooperative that's been continuously operating for 30 years, and we plan to join it. But right now we're bewteen babysitters. And we did manage to go out one evening after we hired a babysitter via a nanny service. We also reconnected with a single mom from our old co-op and now trade freebies with her.

All that said, though, I wouldn't dream of taking Parker to a movie theater, and he's three years old. Taking an infant is out of the question, with all the waking up, crying, needing a diaper change, etc. We probably wouldn't actually see the movie anwyay.

I think the babysitting cooperative sounds like an inspired idea!

I definitely hear you about the issue of living in urban areas. A lot of us just don't make the effort to know our neighbors, truth be told. I don't know if it's fear that they'll be freaks or think that we are, feel that we'll feel some sense of obligation, or just simply precious little darned time in today's working world. Possibly some combination, or none of the above. I'm sure there are different answers for different situations.

For what it is worth, I never, ever had any doubts about what fine parents y'all would be. :) I know that Parker will never go out without an umbrella. *winks*
