Rain. Warm drops of rain falling on her, stitches of a pain full of grace leading her to the limit. Charlotte’s thoughts go back to Naomi, who has just left in the helicopter, carefully protégée in a body bag, as the rain starts to fill her empty soul with sorrow.

They were never friends. They never swapped a word more than necessary. They never played together that stupid memory game. It was Charlotte’s fault, she admits it now. And she may be just insane, but she’s remembering with a little bitter smile the feel of Naomi’s smooth, dark skin she brushed once or twice back in the freighter, where the corridors were so narrow and the bedrooms so close, and she’s imagining how her full and rounded lips would have tasted if she had had the courage to try. Unfortunately, she hadn’t.

Charlotte’s never been a brave woman and she knows that. She’s always kept on waiting for the others to make the first move, like a scared deer trembling, hidden in the undergrowth. Half of the times, if she feels a sudden approximation or she sees too much compromise, she’ll just run away, disappearing among the trees.

She felt and saw that with Naomi, so she escaped like she has done her whole life, with no exceptions.

The tears mingle with the rain as they roll over her face, leaving a wet trace over her cheeks, surrounding the perfect curve of her mouth and finally reaching the lips. They taste sharp like liquid acid coming from her flooded eyes, and make difficult the simple act of forming a word that has always been a constant line in the map of her life.
