Last night we ate at the
Thai Edge in Cardiff, and then saw
Velvet Revolver at the CIA.
Firstly the restaurant. Clean, contemporary subtle and relaxing environment. Nibbles while you consider the extensive menu. Helpful chatty and attentive staff. The platter we had as a starter was varied, and beautiful to behold, the main courses looked simple and tasted complicated. It was all extremely flavoursome, spicy and subtle without being over hot, and above all elegant. In addition, the coconut rice was good enought to eat, by itself, all day every day. Highly recommended.
Velvet Revolver. I had high hopes, but unfortunately these were completely dashed. Their sound was rough, there was little variation in tempo or guitar sound, there was no clarity, and the bass drum was over amplified. This led to a montonous background rhythm guitar/bass/drums mulch, intertwined with chest vibrating bass drum, over which enthusiastic but completely unintelligible lyrics were laid. The only highlights were the occasional lick by the man in the tall hat, but even these seem to be limited and without sparkle. We stayed for perhaps 8 tracks, a little over half an hour. There was no magic.
Final score
Thai Edge 1, Velvet Revolver 0.
