Last discussion post before the new season starts, so my question this week is for speculation. What do you think will happen in the first episode, as well as the rest of the season? More reoccurring villains, more background info, etc.? Do you think we'll actually get answers to anything, if the machine is alive, what happened to Finch and Nathan

I speculate that Reese will take Carter much more into his confidence than he did last season. This is out of necessity of course, since he needs a trustworthy partner to help him find Finch. But the consequences of that changed relationship will be significant for the rest of the season. Carter will press for more details about their operation, partly out of natural curiosity, partly out of a need to feel protected in an uncertain environment. This tension, this pressure for more knowledge, will be one of the hallmarks of the second season, I believe. It makes for good drama on both the personal and structural level.
I'm less sure of what Fusco's role will be. I am sure he will continue to be involved with the corrupt cops of HR. But didn't that great villain Simmons see him when he and Carter rescued Reese at the end of Firewall? If so, how can Fusco continue to work undercover in HR.
I think we will learn more about the histories of all four team members. Obviously we will get lots about Finch and the creation of the machine in the premiere episode. I suppose we will learn about the death of Nathan and Finch's injury at some point in the season as well.
I figure we will get the background on Carter's dead husband and Fusco's divorce also. These are four damaged people with lots of shared emotional baggage and that theme will be explored in greater detail this season, I imagine.
As for villains, I say the more the merrier! I am looking forward to the return of Elias, a great nemesis for both Reese and Carter. Elias is now armed with even more insight into both of them: he knows that Reese is sworn to protect Carter, he knows that Reese saved Carter's son, he knows that Carter works with Reese on cases.
Elias is in a strong position to threaten both Reese and Carter in significant ways and I can't wait to see it worked out this season.
And what is there to say about Stanton? Such a great villain. Now that she has Snow in her clutches she has access to lots of information and muscle to effect her plots, whatever they are. I think that since Reese doesn't know that she is alive and in NYC, that reveal will be one of the big dramatic points of the season. Snow will continue to put pressure on Carter. And also Snow is an important link to information about the late lamented Alicia Corwin. So I'm sure we will get lots more in that direction as Reese probes further into the meaning of Ordos and the nature of the machine.
Personally, I would like to see a knock-down drag out fight between Stanton and Carter. These two are like dueling angels of evil and good sitting on Reese's shoulders battling over his psyche, his past and his future. That dichotomy has to play out somehow this season.
I also think that in season 2 we will get the follow-up to Carter's saving that picture of Reese smiling with Jessica. That was too significant a moment to let drop.
I hope we get more villains as delicious as Stanton, Snow, and Elias for season two.
My interest in Root is minimal at the moment, but that could change if something good happens to deepen her character in the early part of the season.

I like Carter too, but honestly, I think Finch was Reese's good angel first. :-) I'd rather see Finch and Stanton fight it out, though I'd be happy to see Carter jump into the fight on Finch's side.

I am looking forward to the new dynamics that will hopefully occur now that all core 4 members of the "Team" are aware of each other and are working as a unit. But I am also hoping that they will stick with Finch's stated directive that no one else should know about The Machine besides him and Reese.

As for Stanton, I don't think she qualifies as a villain. In all the flashbacks, she was doing her job. No different from Reese. And getting the drop on and shooting the man that ordered her execution - and was there to kill Reese, but would have happily killed her in his place - makes her badass, not bad.

True. But did Stanton not hesitate because she's better at following orders? And if it was true and Reese was corrupt, hesitation could get her killed. I don't think she's a good guy or a villain - there's not enough info about her to decide yet.
