Discussion post - more speculation...

I've been checking out some of the flashbacks, and some of this stuff is making me very curious. I'm putting the parts under cuts just because otherwise this post is going to end up huge...

First, there's the theory I floated earlier about Nathan. From Super, here's some selected dialogue from the flashbacks:

First 2005 flashback )

episode: 1.02 ghosts, character: mark snow, episode: 1.08 foe, character: cara stanton, character: the machine, character: john reese, character: alicia corwin, episode: 1.15 blue code, fandom: discussion, episode: 1.11 super, character: harold finch, character: nathan ingram

I've thought that Reese has always been the Machine's asset since the first time Stanton said "anonymous source, very reliable". I always figured that if they take the 'Machine (TM) is sentient' route than TM chose Reese for some reason and later on led him to Finch. I also figured that'd be a season 4 or 5 revelation, lol.

Seems to me that the show has been loosely tying together the pasts of Reese, Finch and Carter. Carter was an Interrogator in Iraq and Afghanistan the same time Reese was there, Reese was switched to covert ops round about the time that the Machine started detecting threats, Finch saw Jessica on the irrelevants list and ignored it (and who knows how much Finch knew about the operations conducted to stop the aforementioned terrorist attacks? Quite a bit, I'd think - he did say he'd been watching Reese for a long time ... in the pilot? If TM ISN'T sentient - I go the route that Finch chose Reese to be TM's asset in those maneuvers and then tracked him down later when both their lives fell apart). Not enough past on Fusco to figure him in =[ Maybe he represents the audience? idk.

Don't think the guy w/ the bag over his head was Nathan - I thought it more likely that it was Weeks (unless they screwed up the timeline through lack of oversight - wouldn't disbelieve that either).

The guys over at the podcast are obsessed w/ that #8, also. But they give that number in a ... 2002, flashback? That's a really long time ago. We need a largely cast of past characters, first =[ I can't wait to see them!

I'm a little bummed w/ everyone turning out to be self-centered and corrupt - I'm really hoping Nathan didn't die trying to undermine Finch - that he died trying to save an irrelevant or even Finch! How sad would it be if he tried to help the perpetrator instead of the victim because his understanding of the function was imperfect? That caption on Nathan being a threat was very ambiguous ... he was a threat or there was a threat against him?

I love the mysteries, too - enough that they make the show intriguing w/out being so overwhelming that the show can't function w/out them.

Thanks for your great comments!

I love that idea so much... (And it wouldn't be the first time I really jumped the gun by a season or three figuring out something the authors have planned. I did it with a major revelation in Babylon 5 and then had to put up with 2 years of 'oh, that's a crazy idea, they wouldn't do that' comments... This is one of the reasons I usually avoid spoilers like the plague!)
