Smoke

May 10, 2007 14:06

The sun is a languishing red over the hazy sky and is dim enough to look at directly even in the middle of the day. I brush a white dust off of my car before I drive, it is unmistakable, ash. People at work are coughing and sneezing but I seem to be spared that so far. Instead I have an unrelated disease who's symptoms are unpleasant enough that will spare you the grizzly details but they can not be blamed on the smoke in any case. My sister noticed the ash also and questioned whether is might be the coal plant, but I know that the coal plant has been running at full force for years now both when the nuclear plant was on-line and when it was not(I think it is off-line right now, if you work for FPL feel free to correct me). For years I have seen the endless progression of coal heading to North Crystal River. No, this is something else.

I have, of course heard of the fires in Flagler, Polk, Brandon Counties and even in places like Southern Georgia but I don’t believe there are any fires closer to Citrus than Flagler. How big must this fire be to be blowing ash and smoke this far South, why more than a hundred miles? The governor prayed that this new tropical storm will rain on the fire but it does not seem like it will. However, we might get a cold front that could give us some rain, though it would be strangely out of season if it happens.
