I'm waiting to hear back from Colonial Wmsbg about a potential job interview...and while it's really premature, I'm already kinda starting to scout around for as-affordable-as-possible places to live. And since I'm a lot more familiar with the historic area aspect of things than I am with general around-town things, I was hoping you could help me out. :D If you were looking for a place to live (apartment, townhouse, tiny house [tho the other two are much more likely]), which part of town would you avoid at all costs? Where would you especially want to live? Any other general insider info you'd like to share would also be much appreciated. um. williamsburg is expensive. everything there is a hell of a lot more, even the groceries, because of the taxes.
your best bet is to live in newport news and commute about 20 min a day to colonial williamsburg.

Yeah...about the most inexpensive place I've run into so far runs around $540 per month; the couple others I was checking out are in the upper $600s. I was thinking about living out of town, but I didn't know if the gas needed would end up making it come out about the same anyway... my car is kind of a guzzler. heh. If I would end up in Williamsburg proper, is there any part of town in particular that should generally be avoided?
The job is for an editor/writer; that's what I've most wanted to do, and the fact that it adds the history aspect into it is just stellar. Unfortunately it's at most 20 hrs a week, between $13 and $18 an hour...so between rent and new bills and things I have to pay off already, I definitely would have to get a second job...

what in the world would be williamsburg proper?
either you live in a nasty house near lightfoot which is quite a drive
or you live in an apartment that is usually only for W&M students
there is no housing for the most part at colonial. it's for rich people and students.

my suggestion
get a job at the books a million up there
there's not much up there as it is.
unless you work at one of the outlet mall stores

during the summer, no matter where you live, even in the burg, it's going to be a drive because of retarded tourists who don't know how to drive, who slam on the breaks when they see something historical, and who drive so damn slow you want to kill them.
my suggestion: get an apartment near ft. eustis right near the highway and drive up 64

also, most places in the burg will not rent until you physically come down and do paperwork. and they will want a renting history.

"Proper" like within the city limits as opposed to more "suburbs" (whether it actually has 'em or not), just to differentiate. I'm not familiar with where/what Lightfoot is, I don't think...but as I said, I'm not familiar with much general town-wise. eheh. One of the places that I could almost afford looked to be kind of like a townhouse complex...the address was I think Merrimack Trail, "within minutes of CW", however many minutes it might be.

I figured they'd want to see me in person, yeah...if it gets that far I'll have to go down there anyway, so it's no problem. I haven't rented anywhere else...hopefully that wouldn't be an impediment.

Maaaaan, tourist drivers...they're somethin else. I've had some experience with dealing with them, since my grandparents used to live about 20 mins north of Myrtle Beach, and summertime was just total insanity. I imagine it'd be even worse with all the quick decisions on historic site-seeing coming into play...

that and those from the area going down to the beach. it gets crazy. i usually stay home. i can't stand the traffic. and i had to work up near busch gardens every day one summer. near kingsmill. it was a bear. people were always confused as to where they were and would just stop in the middle of the road to see where they were and if they were in the right place not even caring about the drivers behind them that may actually have somewhere to go and a schedule. and getting food sucked. there was a mcdonald's a block away and it took forever to get anything thanks to tour buses full of people and retards who can't make an order.
i am so glad i don't work up there anymore. i'd feel compelled to hurt people with a brickbat

get rid of the guzzler
prices here are around 2.20 already.

best thing to do is trade it in and get the money and buy an army guy's car who is being sent elsewhere and can't take his car. they sell them cheap because they have no time to sit and sell. on langely AFB new cars can go for 5000 because people just have to leave. sometimes you get a month's notice, sometimes less.
