“Sad Annotations and Dark Appraisals”
People try to appraise you,
They throw out their personal beliefs and suggestions
as if they had any idea what makes you
who you are
they love to place a number value, stamping it on your chest
as if your going to be sold at some auction. With complete
strangers bargaining for the better part
of your haughty and yet sweet spirited soul.
Unfortunately I don't have near enough money
to pay the amount I believe you to be worth.
Nor in my lifetime could I ever amount such a fortune
but perhaps I could write an IOU
and make it up to you for an eternity
because it is my utmost and diligent belief that you
cannot be measured in a worldly value, where mortals
fight and die for the ridiculous satisfaction of safety and comfort
that slips through hands in green exchanges,
The only comfort you will need can be found in my arms tonight
With beckoning eyes and a friendly tone I tell you,
no, I beseech you to figure out on your own
the value that others place before you, in crumpled wads of cash.
That are carelessly strewn at your feet and trampled on.
As if they deserved a penny from you.
Then, perhaps, on some distant day
you will find the appraisal that I made of you
I know I hid it in the darkest recesses of your room
but sometimes that which takes the longest to find
is held most dear.
I don't expect you to understand what it is I'm implying
but I expect you to smile.
If I make your eyes roll and finally get a stupid grin
then that’s just all the better for me.
Cuz if your frowns were worth a million dollars
I'd make you smile everyday
and live homeless on the street just in the hopes
that you never go a single day without a smile crossing your face.
Or a tear coursing down your cheeck, though I know
that those days most assuredly will come.
Sometimes suffocating you like a blanket
wrapped around your head, you can't see,
you can't hear and every decision you make is based
on the longing hope that the light of day will soon
shine through. I know not what you will face.
I know not how you will face it
but I do know that through it all
without a reason of a doubt
you will have me there
to make you smile.
