Things I did not need on my Jamaican vacation: sunscreen, sunglasses, swimsuit.
Unwanted souvenirs: 8 mosquito bites
# of times I had to take my shoes off at the airport: 857
Ok, so I'm back. All in all, I had a good time. Any time I'm not working (but still employed), I'm having a good time. Unbeknownst to us, there was a concert, Caribbean Alive, going on Saturday and Sunday just up the road from the resort. MTV had something to do with it- launching some kind of new network or something. Some of the artists who were there: Jimmy Cliff, Spragga Benz, Musiq, Mario Winans, Lady Saw and some other people I didn't recognize- some of which were staying where we were, which was why we couldn't get the right room the first night- hmph. I wouldn have like to have gone but it was raining and Tonya has questionable taste in music. One of the guys who worked at the resort and we ended up hangin out with later, later (too late) told me he could have gotten us tickets to the show (they all got free tickets) and introduced us to some people like Musiq (he was staying there). Dammit.
The Good:
- The flights were smooth. No crashes to report. A lil turblulence on the way home. Air Jamaica rocks.
- The resort, Couples Sans Souci, was fab. I see a few other people booked before it was Couples. The grounds were lush and beautiful. Our suite had a jacuzzi and in the end a balcony too.
The food was decent. Tried some things I liked, some I didn't.
- Free flowing drinks. Btw, I had unprotected sex on the beach with a Jamaican. Well sort of. Every bar you went too made sex on the beach different. One I went to gave me this beige cream colored concoction. Bartender explained it was SOTB Jamaican style which is made with a cream liquer. So the lady sitting next to me said it was sex on the beach without a condom and decided to try some too.
At one point, I think my entire blood supply was replaced by rum. I did okay until I switched to rum punch on the last night, which I discovered was made with overproof rum. Ok, I knew that and drank 5 of them anyway. I wouldn't say I was hungover the next morning. Rather I was forced to wake up while I was still drunk.
- Got another nice Bob Marley shirt to add to my small collection. Got a gorgeous vase from WassiArt where they make pottery. I'm not really a fan of shopping at the markets where you have to bargain but we went there too. Managed to come home without a bunch of trickets and souvenir crap.
- Dunn's River Falls was lovely even though we didn't climb the falls.
- Had a massage and body scrub in a gazebo overlooking the ocean. Very nice. Also a manicure and pedicure.
- The people. Met some really nice ones.
The Not So Good:
- It rained the entire time we were there except when the sun started to peak out on the morning we left. So everything we did, we did in the rain. Everywhere we went, we went in the rain.
- We didn't even make it to the ocean or the pool because of the weather. Sucked. But at least it wasn't storming.
- I was not impressed by the beach anyway. Kind of small and too close to the property. I understand the nude beach was supposed to be better butterumma I didn't make it there either.
- We were supposed to have a suite with 2 twin beds (travel agent requested this in advance) but ended up with 1 king. This could not be remedied on the first night so we were stuck there for a night due to the concert performers staying there. But when they did move us we ended up with a suite with a balcony and a jacuzzi.
- The ride from Montego Bay (where we landed) to Ocho Rios (where we stayed). I knew the taxi drivers were rough but damn. The ride over wasn't so bad. But on the way back, dude was running late and driving extra crazy.
- Couldn't go to Kingston because the tour was cancelled.
- Didn't make it to Margaritaville because Tonya didn't think she could stay up that late (2am). Hmph. I figured she could do that since it was a touristy place. I dared not ask her to go to a real Jamaican club. Not that I'm a club person but I get tired of doing the touristy things sometimes which she seems to like doing.
The Wack:
- Being pulled out of line at Sangster Airport in Montego Bay for a "random" security check because security dude wanted to ask for my phone number and ask me to take him to lunch.
- Leaving a restaurant one night and being bumrushed by some dudes. I think they were with some concert people. So, one dude pulls me aside and another pulls my friend aside while two others wait in the wings. At first, he's cool. Standard 'I'd like to get to know ya. What are you doing later?' crap. But I like his accent and he seems decent so I tolerate him for a while. We talk, names are exchanged. He asks me to go to the concert. I tell him no. He tells me he wants to spend time. I tell me our room number. Hey I plead drunk- just had a few yellowbirds. Anyway, the guy talking to Tonya fires up a spliff and I'm like it's time to go. I knew it was tolerated but I didn't think it was on the resort. And I wasn't really trying to get a tour of the Jamaican jail. So, we leave and head to the bar. Tonya later tells me that after she told dude her name he asked her "What are their names?" Talking about her ta ta's. LOL! How lame!
6:30 the next morning they come knocking. 6:30 in the friggin morning!! To ignore or get up cussing? That was the question. Ignore. That was the last of them though after another phone call.
- There was another guy we kept seeing at the bar who did nothing but smoke. I don't even think he knew what country he was in- or cared. But to all my weed fans, I'm sure I accidentally inhaled some second-hand for you. *cough cough*
Now do let me know if I missed anything important in case I don't get a chance to catch up. Although being an LJ fiend like I am, I will probably read some anyway.
