Individual Artist

So I finally got over to the art supply store and picked up a large canvas, some acrylic brushes, and acrylic paints. I also signed up for a discount card and got a little thrill when the sales clerk registered me for the card as an "individual artist." I don't think of myself as an artist, I'm a hobbyist. But that's what's great about artists. They're a pretty accepting, tolerant lot. I can remember many occassions chilling with the artsy fartsy folks at college--hiding poems under secret bricks. Painting random peices of plywood on the quad...

Acrylics is a relatively new thing for me--I usually stick to pens or watercolors, or a combination of both.  I've only done one other acrylic and it wasn't so hot. It's a lot different than watercoloring, brush strokes are different, shading techniques are different, even the kinds of blending effects are totally different. But it's nice to try my hands at something new and the thrill of the first stroke of color on paper or canvas is always exciting.

I've commandeered the dinning table for my "masterpiece"---I'm copying a Buddha head I found in an art history book and adding a few things to it.
