My defalt icon is the one it is for a few reasons. Firstly, I love the character of River (Tam, from Firefly/Serenity, in case you didn't recognize her), and I relate to her more than anybody really should. Related to this, I don't mind people associating me with her. Secondly, it's a simple icon that has obviously been photoshopped. The shading on the nose and the colour of the lips especially give that away. I wanted a default icon that wasn't just a screen cap. Thirdly, it doesn't have any text on it, and, while I normally love text icons, I don't really want to default to a specific statement. Fourthly, you kind of have to know the character and the scene this is from in order to know what this is an icon of. I like icons that are kind of little in-jokes, in a way, and I love River in those goggles. ^_^ I think that's it for an explanation.
Lastly, thank you for the lovely compliments!! You're too sweet. And I don't mean to daunt you. =/ Really, though, what comes across as "brilliant" has a lot to do with experience and education. I certainly didn't come across like this when I was in high school. I can speak French because I've been studying it since I was 5. I can analyze literature because I spent copius amounts of time doing such for school. I can speak concisely and rationally because I had to learn to do that in order to control myself and communicate when I was mentally ill. One of my students when I was student teaching once exclaimed that I was good at talking to people, and I replied "I kind of have to be." That's more or less the reason I can do any of the things I'm good at.

You were mentally ill once? Really? ... That's sort of shocking. Well, you definitely got over that.
All I can say is that I can only hope to be as intelligent as you one day.

Sorry, but I nearly died when I read that. ^_^ About four and a half years ago, I was diagnosed with a "Major Depressive Episode," probably brought on by the Depo Provera birth control I was on. I wound up taking the summer off and only doing a half load of courses in school the next year. After that, I went back to school full-time and got a job the next summer. You could say that, at that point, it was "over," but depression is very self-perpetuating, and I've been dealing with it in smaller amounts ever since. I'm also on more medication than you can shake a stick at (Wellbutrin, Celexa and Buspar, plus Ativan, and I used to take Imovane). I've tried to kill myself, and it took years to stop the self-harm. In addition to mood/emotion problems, I had a lot of trouble with speech, due to mild aphasia and an inability to focus long enough to say much.
In short, depression was a huge factor in my life, and it hasn't entirely gone away. Your statement is kind of reassuring, though. The things I had to learn in order to deal with being sick are still very useful when I'm feeling alright, and I'm glad to hear that they make me sound sane and smart. ^_^
