I have AOL as my internet service (Dial-Up) and normally, I am very disappointed with it. Not only because it is dial-up (not their fault) but because their news can be very useless at times... However, about fifteen minutes ago, after having to sign off and sign back on because the dumb thing froze, I saw an article on the first slide of news that

This is one of those issues where I don't think it necessarily should have gone to a public vote. When it comes to human rights and the issue of equality that is something that should be entrenched. When the province of Ontario legalized gay marriage there was no referendum. The government checked with the courts to see where it stood and the courts pretty much said "The Charter of Rights and Freedoms blahblahblah...." so the government said (in a nutshell), "okay it's legal."
At first there was a mini uproar about how it should have gone to a public vote (and I honestly don't know if it would have passed) but things stayed as is. A little while back an opinion poll was done on the issue and you know what? Support for gay marriage had gone up like 25-30%, from being almost 50-50 split.
As much as we have to hold our government responsible to us there are times when they have to hold the public responsible.
I love the men in this article!

And I agree, this shouldn't have a public vote. Ending slavery and giving voting rights to blacks & women didn't have a public vote, this shouldn't either.
As for Canada.. I love you guys. A lot. And you know, about that spike 25-30% in polls, I'm not surprised at all. Once people realize that it's not going to destroy their own rights (Why they'd think that in the first place, I don't understand...) and it won't implode the world, like you said, they get over it. It's not a big deal. It bugs me that it seems to be one... People just need to accept that gay people exist and they deserve the same damn rights as anyone else.
Grrrr.... People..
I do hate that the men in this article decided not to get married just because they grew up thinking they never could or would... They should have jumped at the chance, but that's why they're regretting it now. Even so, they're great. And weren't they quite the handsome boys when younger? ^_^
