Gossip Girl, take two

Sep 13, 2015 13:07

I checked out the first half-dozen Gossip Girl episodes almost a year ago, didn’t really click with it, and kind of drifted away. But I’m enjoying it a lot more this time around. Last night I hit an especially meta episode of the show, which I took as a sign to pause and do a little bit of meta about the show. IDK how much sense this makes, it was ( Read more... )

I think that it all makes sense enough in general terms for the character of Dan that you could even believe Stephanie Savage was telling the truth in saying that they always had Dan in the back of their minds as GG, but they really didn't connect it together in a way that suggested it was a consistent idea for them. In season 2 for example there's Dan trying to cover up his affair with the teacher, or hiding their shared sibling from Serena, only to be ~betrayed~ by GG. I guess you could argue that it was all part of Dan being devious and covering his tracks, but it doesn't really track for me with how those episodes played his reactions to being exposed. Especially when 225 then suggested that there was a lot that GG did choose to hold back, so it's not even like he would have felt obliged to post every single tip regardless of how it would reflect on him. Let some unfortunate ones slip through to keep up his cover story sure, but the shared sibling reveal coming out at the worst possible time for Dan (and some later stuff from ( ... )

I'm going to have to come back to this comment because I've only seen the first third of the season. So far, though, I don't really...feel much of a difference between S1 and S2? The show kind of clicked for me about halfway through S1 (which is cool, a lot of shows take a handful of episodes to find their feet) and it's been fairly consistent since.

Oh whoops sorry, I don't know why I got the idea that you had finished both seasons 1 and 2!

And I'd agree that I did find that season 2 opened strongly, it was mostly towards the middle/end that it faltered a bit for me with the 25 episode order that year, but then season 1 also hit a rough patch towards the end with the 'I killed someone' episodes after the writers strike

God, Blair and Serena are so gay. They’re like, Rizzoli and Isles gay.

Hee, this is basically all I care about tbh. I mean, I would have been really happy if they just followed the books and had them run away together. ♥

THE END OF THE BOOK SERIES ACTUALLY. They ditched the boys for real and ran off together.

Well, I never read the books, I just know what I've read about them online (mostly because I wanted to see how far off the game the show was with books, especially with the GG reveal, which never happens), so anyone is free to correct me with my information. But apparently from what I've learned there was quite a bit of undertones and had some kissing in the books, and by the last book it's just basically them living together and then taking off on vacation with each other. There was also a parody slasher book made specifically of both Serena and Blair being serial killers together. So, yeah. ;)

SERIOUSLY.

Like, now, just less than a decade later, I don't feel like the relationship would be this subtext-y. They would just be gay.

lol, bless this post.

I'm with you on the second half of S1 + S2 in general being pretty cool. AND OMFG, I REMEMBER LOVING THIS EPISODE. Listen, this show had its moments.

And, lbr, probably more dynamic and interesting than Chuck himself. As smirking psychopaths go, he’s strangely lifeless.

IIRC the actor was at his most charismatic in S1, then after that he adopted this inexplicable half-whisper monotone delivery for the rest of the series. A truly mysterious acting choice.

Lookin' forward to your continued blogging! Cackling about it.

The episode was enjoyably meta, which I don't...know why I wasn't expecting, lol. Because the show itself - at least retroactively - is pretty meta.

Obviously I'm watching with some degree of confirmation bias in mind, and I suspect it's one avenue among several that the show more or less kept open for consideration. But I do think the possibility is a strong influence on how at least this episode played out.

Like, you can see it to his attitude in Serena in particular, IMO

Yeah, that's a complicated one. Like, would I still think he was emotionally abusive if I didn't know he was behind this really exploitative public shaming of her? I don't think I would like it? I think it's very closely patterned on how Rufus treats Jenny, which a) irks me on its own and b) is kind of a creepy comparison. But it's really hard to know.
