So for nine seasons so far, here are nine things I totally love about Supernatural.
(1)
SAM, SAM, THE SUSHINE MAN. One of my all-time favorite characters. I’ve worked through a lot through Sam, I think, and unlike a lot of other characters I ~feel on that level, I find Sam very easy to empathize with and love.
(2)
I absolutely love narratives that let me feel uncomfortable with the characters and unsettled in my own reactions to them. I underestimated Supernatural’s ability to do this by a very long shot - and I do think it’s grown in strength on this, and willingness and ability to improve is in and of itself a rare and impressive quality in a show.
(3)
The show’s versatility interests and impresses me. The three EPs - and I’d divide Kripke’s time on the show into two distinct acts, with S1-3 having a very different vibe from S4-5 - have different philosophies, different storytelling styles, just, different flavors to them. But they all feel distinctly like one show.

One of those big consistencies is the by-fans-for-fans feel of it. While not particularly unique to Supernatural, it’s something the show usually does to great effect. And that, as I’ve talked about above, it’s something I don’t think we need to be entirely comfortable with to enjoy. I think we love Henry and Charlie for the same reasons we flinch so hard from Becky and Metatron. This is a conversation the show seems to be having with itself - how much does it help these characters to be savvy of and even enchanted with their awareness of the systems they operate in? how much does it behoove those characters for the people pulling their strings to be conscious of that - and
one that it invites viewers to have amongst ourselves.
(5)
Some combination of factors, probably including the tonal spectrum of the story and its fan-friendliness, leads to a fantastic range of fanworks. I’ve pushed my own limits more with SPN than with any other show. I’ve written more, written longer pieces,
I even made a vid which I never thought I would do.
(6)
The angels. Oh, the angels. They’re an insightful and wistful look at the human condition: how they don’t even understand the extent of their psychological conditioning and can’t comprehend the painful incidents they’re implicated in, how they are forever parsing out their own place in relation to each other and their mission, their desperate search for certainty and purpose. They are us.
(7)
In 99% of contexts I need to avoid admitting to being a person who likes classic rock, because there’s no way to say that without getting sucked into a trivia-based douche-off (as per the siren in S4). But - I really do like classic rock, lol, and the show is consistently a fun way to embrace that.
(8)
My favorite episodes. To that list I’d need to add at least two S9 episodes, Alex Annie Alexis Ann, I Think I’m Gonna Like It Here, and/or possibly Road Trip.
(9)
Season 9. Oh, how I loved this past season. <33
