Before I become totally useless for the rest of the night

I appreciate Simon’s relationship with River more and more over time in that it was the rare example of protectiveness without possessiveness. River is clearly the most important person in Simon’s life, but Simon also had his own deal in that he would’ve been happy to identify himself mostly as a doctor, which I think actually allows him to be more attentive to and supportive of his sister.

Simon’s role as River’s caretaker is a lovely segue into my favorite thing about Simon, is his total chillness about his gender presentation. Simon goes from a world probably much like ours, where surgeons are the baddest motherfuckers in their professional/social circles, to a totally different world, where people are by and large valued by their ability to kill others (that is, the oppositie of Simon’s thing). And he doesn’t wig and have an identity crisis, he doesn’t give up doctoring to be one of the guys or tighten his grip on the significant amount of control he has over these people. He just keeps on being a good doctor, because Simon defines himself by his ability to help others, and not his capacity to Be A Man. And I think that says some very positive things about Simon as a character, and tbh is one of the more promising threads of the plot in terms of gender issues, though admittedly that’s a pretty low bar.
