I've always felt like Bonnie's self-sacrifice is something that is largely singular to Elena and sometimes Jeremy (and has become more so over time)? IDK, I don't think Bonnie sacrifices for just anybody? She sacrifices for the few people she loves and whom she considers to be Worth It.
I'd agree with that, for sure, but IMO it is still self-sacrificing? Just not necessarily consistent, or morally right, for that matter. I don't think she'd universally behave the way for other people as she has for Elena and Jeremy. I would kind of distinguish her thing about Jeremy from her thing about Elena at this point because he's so closely tied in with so many of her big crises of power that she has this big sunk-cost psychological investment in him that is pretty distinct from her devotion to Elena.
Though I also do think there's a little bit of the stuff I touched on in the parenthetical, that Bonnie's really big moments are about this drive to prove that she's tough enough for these big epic fights. Like, I don't think her sole motivation against Klaus back in S2 was about the Gilberts? I think they're why she got involved in the first place, but by the time we got to the confrontation at the end of the season she really wanted to kick his ass. And I think that ties into the anchor situation, that she gets into something for these very personal reasons and then it becomes global, whether she wants it to or not.
It fits for me with the theme of witches being entrusted, in exchange for exercising the immense power that they do, with keeping the balance of nature (especially since Bonnie has repeatedly chosen Elena and/or Jeremy over her witch heritage, both in terms of defying her family's advice/warnings and defying the laws of nature and the greater good)?
