AH! I hadn't even thought of how you'd take to McNulty -- it occurs to me he might be the perfect character to write about with some of your manly identifications :). S4 is so awesome. Personally I mostly hate S5, so as far as I'm concerned, you've now seen the best of the show :).
I expected so much to hate him! Because those impulse control issues usually get normativized as cowboy authenticity, you know? But the show's very clear on the fact that it's mostly about him being by turns manipulative and sloppy. I don't know how I feel about him, but I think he's handled in a very sharp way.
Everyone on The Wire is the protagonist of their own story, the center of their own little world - and this never comes across as some self-congratulatory bullshit about ~selfishness, but rather, is an acknowledgment of innate human dignity
