I didn't mean to read this particular spoiler - I am practicallly the victim here - that "someone we've known since S1" is going to bite it next week. I can't be having with the idea that Tyler will die, at least, not this Thursday because his arc still feels like it's kicking into gear. And I don't think Plec would really be that vague if they were going to kill off a regular. And also, I reject it completely.
That said, I do think he's being set up for a very personal tragedy: I think smart money's on Carol Lockwood dying.

I can't be having with the idea that Tyler will die, at least, not this Thursday because his arc still feels like it's kicking into gear. And I don't think Plec would really be that vague if they were going to kill off a regular. And also, I reject it completely.
That said, I do think he's being set up for a very personal tragedy: I think smart money's on Carol Lockwood dying.
Reasons:
- She fits the "known since S1" criteria - we've known her long and well enough that it would have an impact, but not so much that it would derail any ongoing storylines.
- While this wouldn't seem to affect the kids as directly as the personal loss, she's still the Mayor. Not that the Mystic Falls municipal authorities are about to be winning any civics prizes anyway, but that's still a blow to the town's infrastructure which could open the door for any number of trouble-making possibilities.
- Tyler's going to start losing ties to his MF life as his hybrid identity and duties become more integral to him. Carol's death specifically would drive him closer to fellow orphan Hayley, and (depending on what goes down) crank up the parallels to Klaus.
- I realize Matty Blue-Eyes would serve most of these purposes as well, but lol.
