It turns out, people lie to themselves about three things: they view themselves in implausibly positive ways, they think they have far more control over their lives than they actually do, and they believe the future will be better than the evidence of the present can possibly justify.

It's not even uniformly bad, IMO. To some extent, self-deception is a survival mechanism in a crapsack world. But sometimes it's so blatant that conversations end up involving frustratingly (willfully?) bad reasoning to pretend it's not happening.

BSG is totally on my list of Shows To Watch...

OH MY GOD HOW DO I HELP. It's such an amazingly ambitious show, and has not one but two of my all-time favorite characters. There are...a few things I'd probably have been better off managing expectations about? But NOTHING that should put anyone off the show.

Klaus/Caroline actually happening is a NO THANK YOU for me! She loves Tyler and he loves Stefan and he's just creepin' on her. I love Klaus, though, I think he is so fabulously bratty.

I want Cas back, I'm so excited.

If by 'banana' you mean 'penis'...far as I know the only recurring female characters that the fanbase at large has not reacted poorly to are Jessica (safely dead), Jody (maternal role, not romantic or sexual role), and Mary (both). I can understand why Carver's not wanting to give the fuckwitted parts of the fanbase more targets. I hate it, but I can understand it.

Thing I wish Carver had thought of? Have Dean meet Emma in purgatory.

Well, white dick, but yes.

I really wish they would take some fucking responsibility for that. The first season was such massive misogyny-bait, and then every other woman introduced afterwards was sexyfemmeified up to be a love interest because WHAT ELSE COULD SHE POSSIBLY BE. (Well, that or Becky. LOL BECKY, AREN'T YOU FANGIRLS WACKY AND PATHETIC?!?) Of course a lot of women aren't going to enjoy that! But oooooh, THE FANS just MADE THEM stop trying to do better! That is such crap.

Becky was a love interest. Not for Sam, no matter how she tried to be, or Dean, but she was. Which doesn't help at all.

They really do have a shit choice here. Whole bunch of people involved in producing this show. That's their job, that's the whole of their job. If ratings fall, and piss off the fanbase bad enough and ratings will fall, all those jobs might just go poof. If that happens Jared and Jensen will be fine, they make fucktons, they probably haven't been spending as many fucktons as they make, they can survive some time with no job (and given that Creation is still running Stargate cons when SGU has been off the air for a year and a half and nobody in the fanbase ever actually cared about SGU, there will probably still be Creation Supernatural cons, so Jared and Jensen will not actually be without income), but the makeup artists and camera operators? This show gets canceled and they don't get jobs on another real soon, they're in trouble. And it's perfectly understandable (no idea whether correct, but understandable) to ( ... )

So making the show more feminist would be considerable risk for precious little reward, if one doesn't consider 'making the show more feminist' reward in itself, which one should but might not.

I kind of think "making the show better" is a valid end in and of itself? I know I'm preaching to the choir on this, but allowing for deeper characterization and more varied storylines for an entire gender is pretty much a no-lose on that front. It's not a surprise that S3&4 - the seasons of Ruby, Bela, Lilith, Anna, and so on being central to the plot - also had strong worldbuilding and long-arcs and even character development for the *male* leads. Whereas S5 was often moving but kind of a mess thematically, and S1&2 were....you know, fine. There's a correlation there.

If ratings fall, and piss off the fanbase bad enough and ratings will fall, all those jobs might just go poof.At this point, though, the loud minority of people who are around and vocally complaining are in it until the end generally. If a sizable faction was going to ragequit ( ... )

Every time I read your Laura essay, it makes me cry. What is my brain?

I miss her :(

OUR GIRL! I think the "everybody lies" test is such a big part of what made her such a special character. Usually a lead character with that kind of decision-making responsibility would either have bad goals, or would be allowed to get away with a huge level of rationalizations. Laura makes a couple of missteps, but her thought processes always line up with her being someone whose main motivations are, in fact, what she says they are.
