This is one of those big discomforts where I....feel like there's no @anyone to throw this at but I feel weird not saying it? disturbing content, obviously.

[TVD S3 finale spoilers]

I'm seeing a lot of worry about the implications of any Klaus-in-Tyler sexual activity which turn entirely on the general creepiness of Klaus and his infatuation with Caroline, and very little if any discussion of the fact that any rapey stuff Klaus tries to pull on Caroline, he's also doing to Tyler. Which, maybe that goes without saying and this is one of those things that I miss and I should just have more faith in everyone? But as ever, I tend to think someone should be the one to risk sounding like Captain Obvious on this stuff and it might as well be me.

I really don't mean to WATM on this, but I think we can afford to be honest about this all around? I don't care for the idea that someone is presumptively sexual-assault-resistant for any reason, including but not limited to maleness. I don't care for the way that if someone is even arguably superficially implicated in something bad that happens, then they lose their Perfect Victim status and therefore can be overlooked.

In terms of this particular narrative, a couple of things:
  • Yes. This would be worse than the possession itself. Klaus, like Mayor Dick before him, exercises and increases his hold over Tyler by making Tyler complicit in his gross power games. Being exploited by Klaus is nothing new to Tyler, even if it's never happened to this extent. Tyler values Caroline a lot more highly than himself, and being used to hurt her is, as we've seen, a whole new level of emotional hurt for him, too.
  • This is why I'm not half as worried about the whole Klaus and Caroline thing as everyone else seems to be. However dubious the show's grasp on gender politics in romantic relationships, it's had an excruciatingly sharp picture of Tyler's abuse narrative, and I see very little reason to believe it will use Klausler thoughtlessly.

Anyway. I really don't have a problem with anyone prioritizing Caroline there, both because (a) it's totally reasonable to be more vigilant about how rape culture narratives affect women and (b) regardless of that, it's totally okay to care more or exclusively about Caroline. I mean that a hundred and five percent. But idk, the lack of attention to this part of it is not sitting quite right with me.
