lawl, you guys, "Cas fan, yes or no?" is a question that gets asked on this meme, as is "best season opener?"

As if there is more than one answer to either of those questions. Some people juggle geese, I guess?

check out this bad ass motherfucker.

check him out.

this might well be second most epic character introduction ever. (first.)

I am the one who gripped you tight and raised you from perdition.
Geez, Cas, buy a guy a drink first. TIP YOUR WAITRESSES, FOLKS!

But really. It's telling that this is the answer Cas gives to "who are you." Castiel defines himself by what he's done, not who or what he is. And indeed, angel hierarchical communitarianism being what it is, Dean's rescue might be the first and only thing this eternal entity calling itself Castiel can claim as its own achievement.

Castiel's identity and narrative are shaped around this pivotal event, of saving someone. And it rattles the foundations of his world when that means something to him besides a job well done in furtherance of the Will. Dean matters to him, as something other than the object of a holy quest. And since he's Cas, for whom if it's worth doing it's worth doing right, he latches onto Dean like a stingray. He explains himself to Dean, wants Dean's respect, takes only a few weeks of name, rank, and serial number exchanges to decide he's gonna have an existential crisis and lay it on this rock of sanity and wisdom. Cas might translate to Dean as a heartless son of a bitch, but he looks more to me like someone with all too much heart and until now, nothing to do with it.

The rescue mission is so different in light of what happened later. The higher-ups on both sides wanted to break the seal. The angels did want him out to stop the apocalypse, but they wanted the rescue mission to get there too late to actully prevent it. Cas hasn't been approached for recruitment by either faction - he's on the outside by angel standards as well as by human ones at this point. Castiel, just like our guys, was getting only the half the story, enough to manipulate him into putting himself on his place on the board.

And a year and a half later, with no more orders, no more machinations, no more backup, no reason other than pure tempestuous compassion, he'll do the same thing all over again. Sam went into the pit and Cas was just like NO ME GUSTA and stomped on in after him. He took a terrible risk, and he botched the job, and he dug himself in as deep as he could to try to escape from that uncertainty, but I can't not love Cas for coming full circle on this, that his one and only constant is to deliver us from evil.

amen.
