What an amazing episode it was (MM, not Sherlock, which I don't watch). My God, Peggy and Joan. And that moment with Don and Peggy at the end, where Don pulls everything out of his manipulation playbook and once it's clear she's really going, he just...kisses her hand. Aw. I was really happy with Lane in this ep -- wrong, perhaps, but I think he does recognize that Joan can get out of all her financial worries ever, and that is what he really needs right now (getting out of financial worries) and so thinks of everything in those terms. It is self-absorbed, but unselfish, if that distinction makes sense.
I liked Lane in this episode too! Because yeah, his self-serving reason was sufficient motivation, but I really do think he knew his suggestion was in her best interests as well. I don't think he was playing her.
